  3. Primary Responsibilities • Defensive line: Responsibility is to sack the quarterback and stop the run. • Linebacker: LB’s job is to prevent the ball from being caught and to help stop the running backs. • Safety: Responsibility is to prevent the long pass. The safety is the last line of defense.

  4. Ends: The ends/receivers job is to run passing patterns and catch a pass from the quarterback. • Tackle: The tackles job is to protect the quarterback from being sacked and block for the running backs. • Center: The centers job is to snap the ball to the quarterback, and then help protect the quarterback.

  5. Running Back: The running back’s job is to carry and run with the ball. • Quarterback: The quarterbacks job is the leader of the offensive team. The QB calls the plays and either passes or hands off the ball to another player.

  6. Terminology • Down: One complete play or attempt to gain ground. • End Zone: The area t the end of each field where a touchdown or safety is scored. • Field Goal: A place kicked ball that passes in between the goal post and counts for three points.

  7. Continued • Interception: A ball that is intended for an offensive player, which is caught by a defensive player. • Kickoff: The kick used to start each half of the game or to start playing again after a point has been scored. (the scoring team kicks to the other team) • Punt: A ball kicked to change possession on fourth down. • Lateral Pass: A pass thrown or tossed to the side or behind the thrower and the line of scrimmage.

Continued….. • Line of Scrimmage: an imaginary line across the width of the field that marks where a play must start; where the ball was when the previous play ended. • Touchdown: A score counting for six points made by carrying or receiving the ball over the goal line into the end zone. • Safety: When a defensive player tackles an offensive player with the ball in the end zone.
