City of Tomorrow • Development and demonstration of technologies for safe, economic, clean, effective and sustainable preservation, recovery, renovation, construction, dismantling and demolition of the built environment, in particular for large groups of buildings • RTD Priority 4.3.1. “Revitalisation of city centres and neighbourhoods”

  3. Some figures about PRESCO • 29 partners • 5 SC members • 16 European countries, 2 associated states • 8 industrial partners • 7 PRC’s • 1 PNP • 5 local and regional authorities • 4 GOV’s • 1 PNP • 10 REC’s, 6 HES’s

  5. Objectives of PRESCO 1/3 • European “Code of Practice” for Sustainable Construction • Internal Compilation and Integration Phase • Filters: • PRESCO Meetings • Local and/or Regional Networks • 1st European PRESCO-CRISP Workshop, June 2002 • 2nd PRESCO Expert Workshop, October 2003 • Final Code with 200 to 250practical recommendations • Allowing for regional differences • Covering not onlyenvironmental, but also socialand economical aspects(sustainability)

  6. Objectives of PRESCO 2/3 • Environmental Assessment and Design Tools • Exchange of information • Transfer of knowledge and data • Inter-Comparison and Benchmarking of LCA-based environmental assessment and design tools on reference buildings • Evaluation of Code of Practice • Towards a harmonised approach forenvironmentalperformanceassessments

  7. Objectives of PRESCO 3/3 Information and Communication Channels for all decision-making stakeholders • Meetings, Visits, Workshopsand 1 International Conference (2004) • 6-monthly Newsletter • Code of Practice (2003) • Website: http://www.etn-presco.net

  11. WP2 Members • WP Chairman: ARMINES / ENSMP -“Equer” (FR) • co-ordinator: BBRI (BE) • EMPA – “OGIP” (CH) • BRE – “Envest” (UK) • IBO – “Eco-Soft” (AU) • W/E – “Eco-Quantum” (NL) • VTT – “BECOST” (FI) • CSTB – “Escale” (FR) • External participating tool: “LEGOE” (DE)

  12. Actions • Action 2.1. Selection of existing or virtual reference buildings • Action 2.2. Environmental performance assessment of reference buildings • Action 2.3. Comparison of results and study of the influence of the use of the Code of Practice • Action 2.4. Definition of a common baseline for assessment methodologies

  13. Reference buildings • 1st phase: Start with ‘easy’ exercise: simple volume – one material CUBE • 2nd phase: complete building: FUTURA House  3 versions of same building • 3rd phase: virtual redesign of FUTURA House  apply recommendations

  14. Assessment of CUBE • Fixed parameters: dimensions, material (reinforced concrete), energy demand, … • Assessment: very divergent results! • Different assumptions (volume, electricity type, percentage of steel, …) • Various sources of basic LCI data • Other sets of result indicators

  15. FUTURA House • Basis for calculations: Futura House – EMPA demonstration project • 3 structural types considered: wood, brick, concrete • Basic data available through EMPA, details set by WP2 partners
