GUIDE REMINDER Home The wars, old buildings and settlements in Kinmen The Battlefield Park--Kinmen Based on historical records, due to constant harassment by Japanese pirates in the 16th century, the war between the Ming and Cing Dynasties in the 1800s, and the military conflict between the KMT and the Chinese communists during the 1950s- 1980s, the Kimen islands had been turned into a military base for defensive purposes. 9. GUIDE REMINDER Home Thus, there were several memorable battles that took place here, and for this reason Kinmen is well worth visiting. In addition to the war relics, there are also traditional southern Fujian-style buildings that have been preserved. 2

  10. GUIDE REMINDER Home It is easy to find that the major settlements on the island reflect the architectural styles typical of Jhangjhou and Cuanjhou. Ancestral shrines form the core of the civilian residences of the settlements, that is, the settlements were built radiating out from a centrally located ancestral shrine. Other than the ancestral shrines, “spirit lion” statues in each settlement were also important images and landmarks – these served to fight off or scare away evil spirits or demons. 3

  11. GUIDE REMINDER Home Buildings of the traditional Southern Min, Western, or a mixture of the two styles have been preserved to this day, which essentially represent the most valuable attractions in Kinmen National Park. 4

  12. GUIDE REMINDER Home Reading Ⅱ Jhaishan Tunnel Several important battles were fought on Kinmen, including Guningtou Battle, Dadan Battle, September 3rd Bombardment, August 23rd Bombardment and June 17th Bombardment. The August 23rd Bombardment is probably best known, for it is when the island was subjected to over 20 days of constant shelling. 1

  13. GUIDE REMINDER Home Jhaishan Tunnel is located in an area where the southern coastline of the Kinmen Island protrudes into the sea. It consists of several branch tunnels with A-shaped waterways of a length of 357 meters, which mainly served as barracks and as a base for small naval vessels. And it took five years to construct these tunnels, from 1961 to 1966. 2
