Shaw Trust mission statement: • Our clients are at the heart of all we do. • Our Vision is that every disabled and disadvantaged person has the opportunity for work. • Our Mission is to empower the individual through access to employment. • Our purpose is to provide the resources and opportunities for disabled and disadvantaged people to engage more fully within society and realise their potential.

  2. History of the Trust: • Shaw Trust was registered in 1982 during the International Year for Disabled Persons. • Shaw Trust originated in the village of Shaw in Wiltshire specifically to meet the needs of a small group of individuals. All were severely disabled, but each one had valuable skills and abilities. • Shaw Trust is now widely recognised as one of the leading authorities on disability, disadvantage and employment, and is the largest UK provider of employment services for disabled people. • Shaw Trust now supports over 40,000 people a year across England, Scotland and Wales through job preparation, job finding, job support, job retention and job creation. •  Shaw Trust currently finds jobs for, or supports in jobs, over 9,000 people a year.

  3. WORK STEP eligibility. Who is it for?: • Government funding Supported Employment Programme. • Designed specifically for people who due to their disability may find it hard to find or keep a job. • Workstep enables individuals to work effectively in a job by identifying their needs and providing the necessary support to fit their requirements. • Support length normally 1-2 years but may be on going if required. • Can take referrals from any employer and anyone. • Individual must be over 16 years. • No upper age limit. • Must be disabled as defined. by the Disability Discrimination Act.

Eligibility cont’d:In addition eligible people must fall within one of these groups. • Incapacity Benefit and/or NI credits only (including SDA & Income Support). • On JSA and/or NI credits only; for 6 months or more in a current or ‘linked’ job seeking period. i.e. Incapacity Benefit, Invalid Care Allowance, Maternity or Training Allowance.

Eligibility cont’d again! • Job Seekers Allowance LESS than 6 months but immediately on Incapacity Benefit prior to JSA. • A former Work Step client who progressed but needs to return within two years OR has left for any reason and returns within one year. • Currently in work but in danger of losing their job as a result of their disability. (Both client and employer can notify the Trust) • A recent or prospective education leaver whom there is a clear need for Work Step support.

  6. What Work Step can offer a client in work: • Regular meetings for development activity. • Development plans to provide for example: • Specialist equipment. • Facilitate internal training, and finance for specific external training. • Work station assessments. • DDA awareness training to staff and managers. • Interpreters and communicators. • Mentors and 1-1 support through job coaches. • Help with fares through Access to Work. • Any other support specific to the individuals requirements. • Regular ongoing monitoring reviews. • Free service.

  7. What Work Step can offer a client not in work: • Regular meetings for development activity. • Development plans to provide for example: • Application form filling / employer liaison. • Interview techniques.. • Advocate at interview. • GOALS confidence and motivation training.. • External training courses. • Work experience / Work tasters. • Basic skills screening. • Any other support specific to the individuals requirements. • Regular ongoing monitoring reviews.

  8. Examples: • Case study one: Individual with Dyslexia. • Case study two: Individual who suffers with Depression. • Case study three: Individual with Epilepsy who has struggled to find work.
