  1. LNHS/ISSIgniting a Passion for 21st Century Engineering and Science Knowledge

  2. AP Physics B or C Which course is right for you?

  3. Why take High School Physics? • Modern technology involves physics • Leads to a better understanding of any science • Physics classes develop critical thinking skills • Polishes the skills needed to score well on the SAT

  4. Why take High School Physics? • College success in science, computing, engineering, and premed depends in part on passing physics • College recruiters recognize the value of physics classes • Job market for people with skills in physics is strong

  5. Prepare Now to Succeed in College A 1999 U.S. Department of Education study found that the strongest predictor of college graduation is something students do before they ever go to college: Participate in rigorous, college-level courses in high school—and AP courses in particular. Clifford Adelman, Answers in the Tool Box: Academic Intensity, Attendance Patterns, and Bachelor’s Degree Attainment (1999), U.S. Department of Education.

  6. AP and College Success™ Students who take AP courses and exams are much more likely than their peers to complete a bachelor’s degree in four years or less. Source: Camara, Wayne (2003). College Persistence, Graduation, and Remediation. College Board Research Notes (RN-19). New York, NY: College Board.

  7. Which AP Physics Course? • AP Physics Bprovides an overview of physics topics covering a wide spectrum of topics using algebra skills • AP Physics Cprovides an in-depth, rigorous study of mechanics and electromagnetism using Calculus skills

  8. AP Physics B • Excellent training for future college students majoring in pre-med, architecture, chemistry, engineering and physics • Passing the AP exam with a 3 or higher usually results in a general science college credit

  9. AP Physics C • Equivalent to the introductory physics courses offered for science and engineering majors at most colleges and universities • Passing the AP exam with a 3 or higher usually results in a credit for a required college physics course

  10. AP Physics C AP Calculus BC • Combining studies in these two courses provides the greatest depth of understanding of content and applications • Provides the rigorous preparation required for a college major in engineering or physical science

  11. AP Physics C, AP Calculus BC and Multivariable Calculus • Adding multivariable calculus to AP Physics C and AP Calculus BC allows the greatest understanding for engineering/physical science students • Provides the most rigorous foundation available at the top high schools in the country, like the NCSSM

  12. Physics at LNHS & NCSSM

  13. Why Take High School Physics? • LNHS is striving to provide a rigorous foundation so our students can: • Gain acceptance at the best colleges. • Succeed in their engineering and science studies in college. • Earn college course credit so they can graduate in four years or less and reduce tuition and other expenses.

  14. Why Take High School Physics? • Physics is a cornerstone of this effort • AP Physics B/C, in particular, are a critical part of student preparation and are essential to those interested in the engineering or physical science fields.
