  1. SaskFlax and Sustainability Long Term Goal: Flax to be the “Crop of Choice”

  2. SaskFlax and Sustainability • We are serious about Sustainability of Flax as the “Crop of Choice” • Adopted the report on December 18, 2009

  3. Flax market - Population • Europe: 500 Mio • North America: 330 Mio • Japan: 130 Mio

  4. Market importance • EU takes 70 - 80 % of exported Flaxseed • Around 317 Mio $ for Canada • North America and Japan around 20 % of Flaxseed • EU tolerance to GM Contamination in Flax 0.01 %, too low for trading • Testing for GMO contamination wide spread in Europe

  5. Importance of Flaxseed as Health Food or Nutraceutical

  6. Flax the Renewable Source of essential Omega – 3 fatty acid versus fish • Sustainability criteria: Development and Use of a resource without sacrificing the needs of future generations

  7. Sask Flax’s Job • Develop checklist for producers how and where contamination can occur: • During seed cleaning – need for certificate • During combining, storing, and handling • Volunteering in following crops • Know the growth habits of the plant: self-pollinating, difficult to control in consecutive crops • Communicate: Conference calls, meetings, website • Develop policies with the trade to build confidence for growers: simplify testing requirements, due diligence, seed procurement • Stay pragmatic, leave emotions out

  8. Effects on SaskFlax • Expected shortfall of Producer Check-off • Reserves built up to one year operational costs • Long – Term commitments in Research, example Northern Adapted Flax with Viterra • Fibre research with Crop Fibres Canada

  9. Reduce and Eliminate Burning in Fields

  10. Using the back casting principle: Where are we today? Where do we want to be in the future? How do we get there? • Regain access to the lucrative European market by improved quality control to meet specification • Develop a market and new uses for fibre

  11. What is the future for SaskFlax? • Challenging times need careful planning and a concerted effort to establish confidence with the farming community, the trade and customer • Currently GM contamination reported in Russia and China • Canada has an opportunity to get a handle on the contamination issue and become a trusted supplier of flaxseed again: quality, appearance, cleanliness, low cadmium • Testing for GMO will stay with us for several years

  12. I still like my flax !
