Outline of the workshop • Overview of the Hausslein Awards • Criteria for the award • Step by step • Creating the idea (who to contact if you are not sure if the idea is a billable service available through early intervention or another program) • Recruiting a team of parents • Developing a plan • Collaborating (who to collaborate with: early intervention program, community organization, etc. • Writing the proposal • Requesting letters of support (who to ask) • Submitting the proposal • Getting the award and making it happen • Reporting to the early intervention community at the Hausslein Award Ceremony

Criteria • Parent-driven • Parent-implemented • Cross programs with community outreach • A new program or a new component to an existing parent-initiated program • Demonstrate collaborations between families and other members of the community • Will continue beyond the project • Will include numerous families • Offers parent networking opportunities • Tailored to the identified needs of the group

Key Elements of Family-Centered Services • Recognizing that the family is the constant in a child’s life, while the service systems and personnel within those systems fluctuate. • Facilitating parent/professional collaboration at all levels of service provision: services for an individual child; program development, implementation, and evaluation; and policy formation. • Honoring the racial, ethnic, cultural, and socio-economic diversity of families. • Recognizing family strengths and individuality and respecting different methods of coping. • Sharing with parents, on a continuing basis and in a supportive manner, complete and unbiased information. • Encouraging and facilitating family-to-family support and networking. • Understanding and incorporating the developmental needs of infants, children, and adolescents and their families into service delivery systems. • Implementing comprehensive policies and programs that provide emotional and financial support to meet the needs of families. • Designing accessible service delivery systems that are flexible, culturally competent, and responsive to family identified needs.
