  2. Preventing Summertime Illnesses and Injuries

  3. The Players • Critters • Plants • Various fluids • The environment • Heat • Humidity

  4. Critters • Ticks • Very little Lyme’s Disease in Oklahoma. • Deer and dog ticks important vectors for rickettsial diseases. • Get ticks off within 24 hours and you are usually OK. • If you feel really bad and headache is a major feature……tick borne illness may be the answer. • DEET works well to repel.

  5. Ticks Deer Tick Dog Tick DEET is a good repellent. Light clothing because you can find the jolly things. Lone Star Tick

  6. Once there, it’s too late. Nail polish does not work!!!! (I’ve tried.) Things will be better in 14 days or two weeks…..promise. Alcohol does work …….embibed. Chiggers

  7. Mosquitos • Many different species…..none good. • Regional. • West Nile an issue in Oklahoma. • DEET really works. • Nothing much else is effective.

  8. And I am not even going to mention snakes! Or Neighbors

  9. The Poison Something Family Poison Ivy Poison Sumac Poison Oak

  10. The Poison Something Family • There is no immunization or preventive “shot”. • Topical steroids are marginally effective. • Rinsing the oil off within 15 minutes reduces problems…….good luck. • You develop tolerance…..or maybe you go out less as you get older. • It is not contagious…..promise.

  11. Various Fluids • Usually too little – Water • OR • Too much - Alcohol

  12. Various Fluids • Alcohol Example of what is known as a “Bud-Lite Floater”.

  13. Various Fluids • Water helps maintain circulation. • Water helps maintain blood pressure. • Alcohol impairs circulation. • Alcohol interacts with many different medications to affect circulation and the skin. • Tetracyclines, doxycycline. • Antidepressants. • Blood pressure medications.

  14. The Environment • Heat and humidity interact. • Higher humidity multiplies the effect of heat dramatically. • At 100° and 50% humidity, the environment acts like 119°. It is much more than what it “feels” like. • Up to 98°, wind cools and beyond that it heats.

  15. The Environment • Time of day is an issue. “Mad dogs and Englishmen……” • There is becoming greater concern about the effectiveness of sunblockers. • Sunblockers need to be applied often and they are not water-proof. • There is a real difference between heat stroke and the rest. Heat stroke resets the dials…..in a bad way.

  16. The Environment • Lowering the body’s temperature cannot be accomplished with ice packs on the neck and under the arms. • Drinking a six-pack will not lower the body’s temperature adequately. • Children, the elderly, and those on medication are much more sensitive to the heat. • Keeping the skin clean helps prevent impetigo.

  17. Now, go out and have some fun!!

  18. Thank you for your attention. No kidding. Have a good summer.
