  1. John Sprott390Careful Decision Making Can computers help overcome limitations in human decision making? by John Maule International Journal of Human Computer Interaction

  2. Article Summary • Be cautious when relying too much on computers as a decision making tool, or in the wrong circumstance • People do not always act or think logically and may rely on wrong data • System may work correctly but give a misleading result because of the large amount of available data • Develop more sophisticated IT systems which are based on a better understanding of human psychology

  3. Ethical Concerns • Designers of a system may make invalid assumptions on how the system will be used • It may function correctly and output the data a user requested, but still cause someone to make a wrong decision because of how people think • The user may be inexperienced and make the wrong choice because of human tendency to look for information that confirms what we already think and ignore everything else

  4. Proposed Actions • First consider the audience, these considerations may not be as important for some users • I don’t want to limit the system to avoid a mistake, at the cost of producing an product that is fast and accurate • Make small, practical changes to the programs decision making such that users can be more confident that their use of it will be beneficial

  5. Possible Solutions • Education on both sides • Ensure the developers of a system keep the end user in mind and can be sure that data is correctly analyzed before giving a result that could be misinterpreted • Make sure the user is aware of the limitations on the system, and the circumstances where they should rely on their gut instinct rather than buying new computers or searching large amounts of data to reinforce an incorrect assumption
