About EDCTP • Partnership between European member states, European Commission and Africa in collaboration with like minded organisations in fighting diseases of poverty – HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis • This is realised by funding clinical trials and research capacity to accelerate development of intervention tools including drugs, vaccines, microbicides and diagnostics against these diseases

  6. Funded projects including clinical trials 2003-2011 EDCTP has funded 174 projects in 29 African countries including 56 clinical trials on HIV/AIDS, malaria and TB

  7. HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention trials • Evaluation of paediatric formulations: fixed drug combinations/scored dispersible tablets • Evaluation of second-line treatment • HIV/TB co-infections • Prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV (PMTCT)

HIV preventive vaccine trials • Capacity building in preparation for • HIV vaccine trials- Joint EDCTP/BMGF • grant • DNA+MVA-CMDR (rgp 140/GLA-AF) phase I/II clinical trial (TaMoVac + AfrEVacc) in healthy young adults • DNA + MVA-HIVA phase I/II in healthy infants born to HIV1 and HIV2 uninfected and infected mothers

  9. Microbicide trials • Site preparation/capacity strengthening • Establishment of cohorts • Characterisation of novel safety markers • PRO 2000 vaginal gel phase III clinical trial

EDCTP-II • Consolidation of the current focus on clinical trials • Phase II and III clinical trials • Expansion to phase I and IV clinical trials • Health services/optimisation studies • Neglected Tropical Diseases including co-morbidities • Open collaborative projects with other developing countries beyond sub-Saharan Africa
