Before Hitler’s Death • Hitler was located fifty five feet under the chancellery (Hitler’s Headquarters), the shelter contained eighteen small rooms with water and electrical supply. • Before his death, he was warned by officials that the Russians were only a day or so from overtaking chancellery . • They urged Adolf to escape to a small town where Hitler owned a home, but instead he decided to commit suicide.

  5. Adolf Hitler’s Suicide Adolf Hitler committed suicide on April, 8th 1945 in his bunker in Berlin. Hitler retired to his private headquarters. He then poisoned himself and his dog, then he shot himself with a service pistol.

  6. After Hitler’s Death ~The body of Hitler was cremated in the chancellery garden by the bunker survivors. ~ After Hitler shot himself, he later recovered by Russian troops. ~ Then, a German court declared Adolf Hitler dead in 1956.

  8. EVENTS LEADING UP TO VE DAY • The Allied Expeditionary Force’s commands an unconditional surrender on all fronts • Negotiations were signed in Riems on May 7th at 2:41 AM • Senior officers from Britain, America, Russia and France were present at the time of the signing

The Actual Event • 17 hours after the signing, the Ministry of Information released the formal announcement that the 8th of May would be regarded as Victory in Europe Day • In the afternoon of VE day, the royal family came out on the balcony along with Winston Churchill, who gave a speech • At approximately nine, the sky above St. Paul’s Cathedral was lit with two search lights were crossed in a “V” for victory • A celebration of the previous six years of war

  11. “Little Boy” • The bomb produced an explosion force of 20,000 tons of TNT • The Little Boy was 28 inches in diameter, 10 feet long, and weighed 9,000 pounds. • It was a ‘gun type’ weapon that shot one mass of uranium down a tube into another mass that created a super-critical mass and a nuclear explosion. • Unfortunately for the US, the Little Boy detonated 1,800 feet above the ground.

  12. Hiroshima • Hiroshima had many military bases and soldiers located near the city and it also had industrial and military significance. Making it the perfect target. • Before the bombing, the population was 340-350 thousand people. • The city was untouched for a very long time and citizens feared that there was something special planned for their city. • On August 6, 1945 at 8:15 in the morning, the United States Army Air Forces dropped a 9,000 pound atomic bomb, code named the Little Boy, from the Enola Gay plane, on the city of Hiroshima in Japan.

  13. “Fat Man” • 10,213 pounds • 10.7 feet long • Detonated 1650 feet above ground zero and everything within a three mile radius was incinerated. Also cities miles beyond were polluted with radiation and hit with a wave of heat. • Over 70,000 fatalities were recorded and many people were missing • The Bomb was an implosion-type weapon using plutonium-239. An almost perfectly spherical plutonium ball was surrounded by high explosives. 32 pairs of powerful detonators circled the plutonium which produced an inward pressure on the core, increasing its density, and creating an explosion equivalent to 21,000 tons of dynamite. • The efficiency of the bomb was supposed to be 10 times that of the Little Boy

  14. Nagasaki • Population 240,000 (before attack) • Nagasaki, Japan is one of the largest see ports in Japan. It is the home of the production of military equipment, ships, and other war material. • The US planned to destroy Kokura, Japan with their second atomic bomb, but because of the bad weather, it was difficult for the pilot and crew flying the Bockscar plane to locate their target. • The Fat Man Atomic Bomb was awakened and dropped on August 9, 1945 at 11:02 AM at ground zero of Nagasaki. • The Fat Man was the last bomb dropped before Japan surrendered. • The atomic bombs are the only nuclear power weapon the US have used to this date.
