  3. Country Profile • 5,765 sq. km. • More than 70% forest • 2004 Population 359,000 ; growth rate 2.9% • 2003 GDP per capita $13,882 ; annual growth rate of 3.8%.

  4. INSTITUTIONAL MEASURES Draft Environmental Act to enhance the adequacy of existing legal mechanism Environmental Impact Assessment Environmental Awareness Programme e.g workshops, cleaning campaigns, youth camps etc.

  8. WATER SUPPLY,HYGIENE AND SANITATION

Good development of piped water supply • More than 75% of Brunei Darussalam’s potable water from the Tutong River • Environmental study on Tutong River in 2004 indicated good quality • Water Village is a major concern – direct discharge of domestic waste • A pilot scheme was conducted to clean up one part of Water Village and steps are underway for the whole cleaning of Water Village in Brunei River

An Integrated Solid Waste Management System to replace the existing landfills • This Integrated sustainable management and disposal looks into: • - Source of waste generation • - Collection • - Transfer • - Proper Disposal • - Public awareness • - Strenghtening institutional framework • Brunei Darussalam had launched ‘Recycling Drive’ initiative in June 2007.

  13. The use of Pollution Control Guidelines for Industrial Development in the planning, management and control of Industrial projects • Wastes such as asbestos and used oils to be disposed at a secured landfill site and used oil recycling facilities

  14. CLIMATE CHANGE, OZONE DEPLETION AND ECOSYSTEM CHANGES

  15. CLIMATE CHANGE • In the process of ratifying the UNFCC. • A consultative meeting was conducted with other government agencies.

OZONE DEPLETING • Brunei Darussalam acceded to the Montreal Protocol on 23rd May 1993 ,and entered into force on 27th August 1993. • Brunei Darussalam is committed to comply with the Montreal Protocol limits on the consumption of ODS and to phase-out ODS with respect its Country Programme . • Currently in the process of the implementation of RMP under UNEP and UNDP. • Introduction of permit system in 2005 and Customs Licensing Act enacted in 2006.
