  2. What color is your Blood? Blood Color

  3. What are your blood Vessel? Artery, capillary and veins Artery- carries blood away from the heart Vein- carries blood towards the heart Capillary – connect the vein and artery and allow materials and waste to pass through walls How long are these together? 60,000 miles

  4. What is the function of the circulatory System? 1. Deliver Materials- chemical messages, oxygen, glucose 2. Removes Wastes- carbon dioxide 3. Regulate body temperature- changes blood flow in skin, carries away and prevents heat loss 4. Fight Disease- attach disease causing pathogens

  5. Terms to use for the diagram Artery Artery Vein Vein Valve Valve Right Atrium Left Atrium Capillary Capillary Left Ventricle Right Ventricle Septum

  6. Heart disease Define the following terms Atherosclerosis Heart attack Heart murmur High blood pressure Hypertension stroke When finished go to www.agame.com and heart surgery

  7. Questions Q:What makes the lub Dub sound of the heart? A:Opening and closing of valves Q:What is the most important chamber? A:Left ventricle Q:Where does blood get oxygen from? A:Lungs Q:What bone protects your heart? A:sternum Q:Why is a hole in the septum bad? A:Blood would not get oxygen Q:Why are the capillary walls so thin? A:To allow nutrients and waste to pass though Q:Why are the artery was think? A: Because of the force of the blood, to push through body Q:Why does your heart work faster when you exercise? A: your body muscles need more oxygen and nutrients to function and thenrelease carbon dioxide

  8. Heart Beat How hard does your heart work? Beats per day? minute? Let find out Where are places you can find a pulse? Neck=Carotid artery Wrist = Radial artery Leg= femoral artery Bicept= brachial artery Temple= temporal artery Finding your resting heart rate. Find Your pulse and count how many beats in a 10 second period and then times by 6 How do you calculate your maximum heart rate? What happens to your heart rate when you exercise? Your heart is made up of muscle tissue. (cardiac) How will exercise affect your heart? Is the heart an example of voluntary or involuntary muscle? Can you demonstrate what this looks like? stopwatch

  9. Lesson 1 continued Vocabulary- cardiology is the study of the heart Right atrium-enters right ventricle Veins from body- enters right atrium Arteries to the lungs- capillaries in lungs Loop 1- to lungs Loop 2 -to body 2a. Left atrium 2b. One loop to get oxygen and the other to deliver I get it-two loop one for lungs and one for body

  10. Lesson 1- The transport system Fun facts The heart need to pump a lot of blood through the body It beats about 700,000 times a week and 36,500,000 times a year Figure 1- cells would not get the materials they need, get rid of wastes and fight disease I get it- delivers materials to cells, removes wastes, reg temp, fight disease Challenge- the left must pump blood to entire body, except lungs Step 1- Heart relax and atria fills with blood Step 2 Atria contracts Step 3- blood moves to ventricles Step4- Ventricles contract Step 5 valves between atria and ventricle shut and blood goes into vessels Step 6 the valves between the ventricles and vessels shut 1a. Pacemaker 1b. Blood would flow backward I get it- Pumps blood through blood vessels
