  3. Essential Question & Standard How can you transform paragraphs into a letter to deepen comprehension skills? LA.8.ELACC8W9 - [Performance Standard] - Draw evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.

  4. Opening What do you know about writing a letter? What must you include? Open your saved letter Word document. Also, make sure that you have turned in your graphic organizer and vocabulary assignment.

  5. Work Session Read the section called Just Add Hot Water pp. 70-76 in chapter 3 McJobs. Imagine you have a job in a McDonald's. Write a letter to a friend describing what you do each shift and how you feel about the pay and conditions. Brainstorm for ideas. Then write your draft on computer, make revisions, proofread, and prepare final. PRINT. You are expected to write 3 paragraphs. Remember— Introduction: Use engaging strategies like questions, factual statements, anecdotes, figurative language, etc. End with your thesis statement. Body Paragraph: Begin with a topic sentence, elaboration (examples, explain, narrate/personal experience, reflect, etc.), and end with a closing sentence. Conclusion: Restate your thesis statement, give advice, question, refer to more on the topic, or other effective endings. When you are finished, read chapter 5 “Stop the Pop” and use the insert method every 2 pages.

If you have questions, raise your hand AND WAIT until your name is called. STAY ON TASK OR YOU WILL BE REMOVED FOR DISRUPTING CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION. When you are finished with ALL work, turn in your work to me and then silently read. 

  12. Opening What is a double entry journal? You select a passage from your reading, and then you write a response explaining what it means and why you chose it. Look at the example below.

For example, I agree with…. because…. For each section of “Stop the Pop” you will create a double-entry journal. There are 7 sections. Section 1 is pp. 128-132, section 2 (mcschools) pp. 132-135, section 3 (the bitter cry of children) pp. 136-139, section 4 (the coke dude) pp. 139-144, section 5 (toothless) pp. 145-150, section 6 (don’t blame us) pp. 150-153, and section 7 (the power of one) pp. 154-155.
