Communicating Through the Decades 1900’s-1920’s 1900: Poulsen invents telegraphone 1911: Computing Tabulating Recording Corporation (later IBM) is incorporated after Hollerith sells his company 1915: First coast-to-coast telephone conversation in the United States 1920: blues and jazz music is recorded 1960’s-1980’s 1964: IBM introduces mainframe computer, IBM 360 1980: Laser-read compact disks used for sound recordings 1982: :-)is used for the first time 1984: Court ruling ends A T & T monopoly of telephone service 1930’s-1950’s 1939: Two-way radio communication developed for military use 1948: Transistordeveloped at Bell Laboratories 1948: Von Neumann develops computer memory system 1958: communication satellite sends signals to earth 1990’s-2000’s 1991: World Wide Web begins 1995: Microsoft introduces Windows95 1995: Craigslist, created by Craig Newmark becomes online service in San Francisco 1998: Larry Page and Sergey Brinfounded Google while at Stanford

  6. Impact on Business People are getting and losing jobs based on what they put on the internet Businesses are using websites and Facebook pages to advertise

The Impacts of Social Media Positive Negative Distracting, possibly leading to lower grades Narcissistic Anxiety, depression, etc. Antisocial or manic behaviors Easily keep in touch with friends Introverted children have an easier time socializing Engaging tools for learning Learn “virtual empathy”

  9. The Future of Technology More “all in one” technology smaller More integrated into schools
