Dante Alighieri • Italian poet of the middle ages. • His divine comedy is often considered the greatest literary work composed in the Italian language and a masterpiece of worlds literature. • In Italy he is known as “The Supreme Poet.” • Dante is also called “The Father of the Italian language.”

  3. Thomas Aquinas • Also known as Thomas Aquin • He was an Italian Dominican Priest of the catholic church. • Immensely influential philosopher and theologian in the traditions of scholasticism.

  4. Geoffrey Chaucer • He was born in London. His name was of French origin and meant shoemaker. • The son of a prosperous wine merchant and deputy to the king’s butler. • His Career in royal services started in 1357 • When his wife died, he was sued for debt

  5. Geoffrey Chaucer continued • Its not known for sure, but is suspected that he married Philippa Roet. • He had two sons, Little Lewis and Thomas • Philippa died in 1387

  6. Geoffrey Chaucer continued • Chaucer wrote at least 9 other works and wrote multiple poems. • He was a valuable soldier to the king and his army. In 1359-1360 he went to France with Edward III’s army during the Hundred years’ war. During this time he wrote Romaunt of the Rose. He was later captured. The king and some of his friends from the army paid a lot of money for ransom to free him.

  7. Geoffrey Chaucer • Died in London on October 25,1400 • Speculations have been made that that he was murdered • wrote the Canterbury Tales as well as many other stories from the 1300’s and 1400’s

Gothic • As of today, the word Gothic describes a style of European architecture which came from the twelfth trough the sixteenth centuries, though the word refers to any non-classical Greek or Roman architecture. • Gothic architecture used pointed arches and vaults, narrow spies, stained glass windows, intricate traceries and varied details.
