  5. Social Darwinism • The Idea that Western Civilization was superior • Imperialism and Conquering nations was Natures way of Demonstrating survival of the fittest.

  12. Berlin Conference • Major European Countries meet in Berlin to divide up Africa • Avoid Conflict • No Africans were Invited • Recognized Belgium's claim to Congo • Established free trade • Can’t Claim any part of Africa unless they set up a government office there.

  13. Dividing up Africa • Over the Next 20 Years they Redrew the Map of Africa • Paid no attention to tribal lands and previous divisions • France, England, Germany, Portugal, Italy • All push their way across Africa

African Resistance • Almost every African Nation resisted Imperialism • European nations fought tribes and kingdoms in every area • Europeans dominated in almost every account • Ethiopia and Liberia Survive • Ethiopia had been reached in 1800 and started to modernize • Successful stop to Italian conquest

Impacts of Imperialism • The Congo • Leopold works people to death for resources • Brutality, Mutilating, killings • International Outrage forced Leopold to Turn over control to Government, Becomes Belgium Congo • Still Africans were not allowed any say • Boers and British in South Africa • Dutch settlers moved away from British • Discovery of Gold leads to War • New Government established set up complete white rule • Racial segregation until 1993
