  4. Reading a Map • Lines of Latitude- run horizontally (east to west) across the map • Lines of Longitude- run vertically (north to south) down the map • Turn to page 76-77. What are at the following points? • 50 N, 30 E • 40 N, 8 E • 53 N, 5 E

Types of Maps • Physical Map- Shows Physical characteristics of the land, Ex: water depth, Land elevation • Political Map- Shows individual countries, state and international borders. • Which map would you use to find… • Capitals of South America? • How far above sea level the country is? • The deepest oceans? • Which country an island belongs to?

  6. Features of an Atlas • Some atlases show the following information • Climate- What you can expect the average weather conditions would be • Population- whether the population is dense or not • Environments- a detailed look of the surrounding areas • Economic activity- which employment seems to be the highest in certain areas.

  7. Practice • What is the climate of France, Sweden, Italy? • Which area is more densely populated; North, South East or Western Europe? What is the population density of Moscow? • What are the environments in and around the United Kingdom, Spain, Finland? • Which country has little or no economic activity? What are the three largest industries according to the map?
