In September 2009, MCAF began a SWIS program to work with newcomer children, their parents and school staff. • The SWIS program provides:   • services for newcomer students and their parents including: • information and support to access available school resources and community based services. • assistance with settlement needs and interpretation services in schools. settlement information and orientation meetings for newcomer students, their parents and school staff. • Parenting Support Groups introducing theSTEP Parenting Program. • support and training for school staff including information an orientation meetings to increase the level of awareness of the needs and challenges of newcomer students of diverse ethnic, cultural, and religious backgrounds
