  1. Settlement • They met again at Yalta in 1945 and the SU agreed to join against Japan in return for territorial gains in China and Japan • Germany divided into four zones • Eastern Europe was left under Soviet domination • Soviets annexed part of Eastern Poland, who gained compensation by receiving part of Eastern Germany

  2. Settlement • Japan was occupied by the USA and stripped of its wartime gains • Baltic states once again became Russian provinces. All states except Greece and Yugoslavia fell under Soviet domination. • Western nations were free, but under American influence.

The Cold War and Decolonization 1945-1989 • The crisis ended in 1948 with two Germany’s divided by a border (Berlin Wall). • NATO formed in 1949 under American leadership • Soviets responded by creating the Warsaw Pact. • Soviets had nuclear weapons, which leads to the arms race. • North Korea invaded South Korea in 1949, the United Nations under American leadership fought back.

The Cold War and Decolonization 1945-1989 • Cold War rivals allied and supported friendly regimes in all continents • Nuclear confrontation almost occurred during the Cuban Missile Crisis. • Vietnam War • Cold War actually declines in the 1950’s and by the 1970’s arms limitation agreements were signed

  5. The Cold War and Decolonization 1945-1989 • Most European colonies in Africa and Asia gained independence • Global economic interactions increased • Cold War closes in the 1980’s as the economically weakening Soviet Union was unable to match American military spending

  6. The Cold War and Decolonization 1945-1989 • In 1989 the Soviet Union had to recognize the independence of its European satellites • The communist system in Europe then collapsed and the Soviet Union dissolved in 1991.
