  1. 2011 Matter

  2. Matter • Matter- • Solids • Liquids • Gasses • Gels

  3. Properties of matter • The properties of matter observable • How it looks: Shiny, dull, color, etc. • How it feels: Hard, soft , rough, smooth • How it smells: Sweet, sour, odorless • How it sounds: Loud, soft, no sound • What it does: Magnetize, stretch, break , tear, bounce

  4. States of matter • Solid- • Liquid- • Gas- • volume • It will take up the space provided

  5. Measuring matter • Volume- • Graduated cylinder • Mass- • Triple beam balance • Density- • Mass/volume = density

  6. Vocabulary • Solution- a liquid mixed with another substance so that they become one • Characteristic property- a property that only that substance has • Melting Point- point at which a substance goes from a solid to a liquid • Boiling point- point at which a liquid becomes a gas • Physical change- change in the shape, texture, or feel of a substance • Properties of matter- observable attributes • Matter- something that has mass and volume • Compound- two or more substance chemically combined • Chemical Change- change in the chemical makeup of matter

  7. Physical changes in matter • Cut • Tear • Fold • Tint • Bend • Melt • Dissolve

  8. Bell Ringer • List 3 chemical changes in matter.

  9. Chemical changes in matter • Changes the state of matter to something else • Burn, rust, chemical changes, etc. • http://listverse.com/2008/03/04/top-10-amazing-chemical-reactions/

  10. Characteristic Properties • Characteristic Properties- • Ex- Boiling point, melting point, freezing

  11. Two Types of Matter Pure Mixture • Pure substance- • Ex- Sugar, salt, iron, copper • Mixture- • Ex- Salt water, fruit juice

  12. Elements (Pure) • Elements- • They can not be broken down into simpler substances by chemical or physical means

  13. Compounds (Pure) • Compounds- • Ex- H2O (water), CO2 (carbon dioxide), C12H22O11 (sugar) • Can be broken down by chemical reactions • This is how we get all the matter we have around us. The 100 or so elements on earth combine in different ways to make millions of different matter with different properties.

  14. Solution • Most evenly mixed type of mixture • Ex- Sugar water

  15. Who needs a laugh? • I've got Gas

  16. Review • List the three states of matter. • What is meant by a characteristic property of matter? • List 5 ways to physically change matter and 3 ways to chemically change matter. • Give an example of • Mixture • Element • compound

  17. Density • Density = Mass per unit volume • D= Grams/ cm3 (solid) • D=Grams/ml (liquid) • Ex- D = 100 g/ 8 cm3 = 12.5 g/cm3 • Layering Video

  18. Density • I have a block that weighs 213 grams. It is 3 cm by 2 cm by 4 cm. • What is its density? • Will it float or sink in water?
