  1. Matter Anything that has mass and occupies space. There are two types of matter: Pure substances Mixtures

  2. Pure Substance • A single kind of matter that is pure and has a specific set of properties.

  3. Pure Substances vs. Mixtures What’s the difference?

  4. What’s in each Cup? Salt Pepper ` 1. Observe the contents in each cup. 2. In your notebook list the substance(s) that you think are in cup #1 and cup #2. 3. Explain your answer. Sand Iron Fillings

  5. Mixtures • Both cups represent a mixture. Can you decide which cup is a homogeneous mixture and which is a heterogeneous mixture? Explain.

  6. Hint • Heterogeneous - The prefixes: "hetero"- indicate difference. • Homogeneous - The prefixes "homo"- indicate sameness. • Can you give an example of each type of mixture?

  7. Mixture • A mixture can be physically separated into pure compounds or elements.

  8. Let’s Try Some • Water and Kool - aid

  9. Heterogeneous or Homogeneous? • Bread • Smoke and air • Cake batter • Snickers bar • Gatorade • Glass of tea • Glass of ice tea

  10. Pure Substances • Atoms • Elements • Compounds

  11. Pure Substances • Atoms- The basic particle from which all elements are made.

  12. Pure Substance • Element - A pure substance that cannot be broken down into other substances by chemical or physical means. • Example:

  13. Pure Substance • Compound - A pure substance made of two or more elements chemically combined. • Example: • or
