  3. Rumblings of Dissatisfaction • Radical Protests • Radical political parties grew more vocal= condemned capitalism depression • Mass protests • Hunger strikes • Rural areas= violence

  4. Rumblings of Dissatisfaction • Communists Party helped expose racial injustice • 1931, white jury in AL, sentenced 9 black boys 13-21 to deathon a questionable charge • Helped w/ legal fees & had mass demonstrations • 1950, all were released

  5. Bonus Army • 5/1932, 10,000 WWI vets & their families protested • Supporting the Veteran’s Bonus Bill= Bonus Army • Congress rejected it, some stayed, defying orders • Fighting broke outw/ police= Hoover ordered the army to make them leave

  6. Bonus Army • July, U.S. Army moved in w/ guns, tanks, & tear gas • Gen. Douglas McArthur had troops force vets from buildings & burn their camps • 100s were injured, 3 died • Angry w/ Hoover

  7. Election of 1932 • Main issue= depression • Rep. nominee Pres. Hoover- defended his policies • Dem. nominee Franklin D. Roosevelt- attacked Hoover’s record & promised a fairer distribution of wealth

  8. Election of 1932 • Results: • FDR= 23 million popular votes & 472 electoral votes • Hoover= 16 million & 59 • Democrats won both houses • FDR promised a “New Deal”
