Graphic Organizer In your foldable: (there will be 3) • Dependent Clause: • Provides extra information about the sentence. • Contains both a subject and a predicate • Begins with adverbs like: after, although, as, because, before, if, since, though, until, when, etc. Example: Since ITIS students had read 2,000,000 words, Mr. Martindale wore a dress and a wig to school.

  8. Graphic Organizer In your foldable: (there will be 3) • Introductory Phrase: • Provides extra information about the sentence. • Contains either a subject or a predicate, but not both. Example: Insistently barking, the dog convinced its owners to throw the ball for him.

Graphic Organizer In your foldable: (there will be 3) • Introductory Word: • Transition words that help show movement of time or position. • Often they help show connection between sentences. • Examples: meanwhile, therefore, next, first, still, etc. Example: Meanwhile, the girls sat on the bench waiting for Muriel to show.

  15. The backstory… Spain • A world power. • Respected by most European countries. • Ruled Cuba, Philippines, Samoa, Guam, and Puerto Rico.

  16. The backstory… United States • Not viewed as a world power. • Navy had several new battleships with steel hulls. • Americans owned sugar plantations in Cuba. • United States was anxious to be seen as powerful.

  17. The backstory… Cuba • Revolted to free themselves from the rule of Spain. • Cubans desired to become an independent country. • Cubans had been fighting the Spanish since before the U. S. Civil War. • Cuba exported 1/3 of the world’s sugar supply.

  18. The backstory… Philippines • Revolted to free themselves from the rule of Spain. • Like Cuba, Filipinos desired independence. • They had been fighting the Spanish for their freedom since the mid-1700’s.

How the United States became involved… • Americans had purchased many of Cuba’s sugar plantations. • In order to protect Americans, our new steel-hulled battleships were sent to Cuba and other Spanish territories to protect American interests. • One of those battleships, USS Maine, was blown up in Santiago Bay, Cuba on February 2, 1898.

  20. How the United States became involved… • After the loss of the Maine and pressure from newspapers, President McKinley made the decision to declare war. • Spain declared war soon thereafter and battleships were moved into position.

Philippines by Sea • Commodore George Dewey of the U.S. faced a Spanish fleet on April 27, 1898 in Manila Bay. • Dewey attacked on May 1, destroying the entire Spanish fleet. • No American ships or lives were lost. • By August 1st, land troops had defeated the Spanish as well. • Dewey was declared a national hero.

Cuba by Sea • Commodore Schley trapped the Spanish admiral in Santiago Bay, Cuba. • The U.S. had a whole new navy of steel-hulled ships and modern weaponry. • On July 3, 1898, the Spanish fleet attempted to break out of the harbor. • The U.S. fleet easily destroyed the entire Spanish fleet with no loss to our fleet of ships.

Cuba by Land • On July 1st, American troops and Cuban rebels attacked the Spanish on San Juan Heights. • After many fierce battles, the U.S. pushes the Spanish off the hills. • A young American leader, Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders played a significant role in defeating the Spanish on land by conquering San Juan and Kettle Hills.

Armistice signed • An armistice is an agreement made by opposing sides in a war to stop fighting for a certain time; a truce. • On August 1, 1898 after defeat in the Philippines and in Cuba, Spain agreed to sign an armistice with the U.S. • Fighting ceased and both countries prepared to discuss a treaty.

  25. Treaty of Paris October 1, 1898 to December 10, 1898 • The American delegation met with the Spanish delegation to negotiate a peace treaty. • A French diplomat also helped negotiate on Spain’s behalf. • All of Europe, except for Britain, was sympathetic to the Spanish side.

  26. Think About… • What benefit would it be to control Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines? • Review the map on page 201 of your Social Studies book.

  27. Treaty of Paris October 1, 1898 to December 10, 1898 • After two months of discussion, a treaty was agreed upon. • Cuba became independent. • For $20 million dollars, the U.S. acquired the Philippines, Puerto Rico, and Guam .

  29. Writing: Which is more interesting? This is what I intended… Far from his home in Spain, the soldier squared his shoulders as he prepared to face the Rough Riders. Juan, as his friends knew him, tried to wipe the thoughts of home away, instead focusing on his gun and the task ahead of him. The soldier was scared. • What do you “see”? • Write your answer on your half sheet.
