  1. Hemp protein the best vegan protein Hemp protein is derived from the seeds of the hemp plant, a variety of the Cannabis plant that contains less than 0.3% THC. In terms of natural protein sources, you needn’t look any further. With hemp, you have the healthiest source of natural protein, with 20 amino acids. Not only is hemp suitable for vegans as a highly viable source of protein, it is recommended for anyone looking to increase their protein intake from natural sources. Now, you may ask, why hemp? The answer is simple – it contains 9 extremely specific amino acids which our body cannot produce by itself. Normally, we tend to consume these amino acids from dietary sources. Not only do hemp seeds contain all the necessary amino acids, they also made up of about 33% protein. Thus, 100g of hemp seeds deliver more protein than 100g of a beef filet, salmon filet, or a chicken filet, which consists of somewhere between 19% to 23% protein. More than 25% of the total calories in hemp seeds are from high-quality protein, considerably more than similar foods like chia seeds and flaxseeds, which provide only about 16– 18%. We humans are omnivores. For us, the main benefit of plant-based protein powders like hemp is that they tend to be more much easier on the digestive tract that some animal protein sources. Hemp protein powder rich in fibres can also help people suffering from immune deficiency diseases, while at the same time greatly increasing the functionality of their digestive system. Also, hemp seeds are a rich source of phytonutrients, the disease-protective element of plants which can benefit you by protecting your immune system, cells, skin, bloodstream, tissues, mitochondria, and organs. Also, hemp protein is low in saturated fat compared to dairy and red meat. This is an extremely important factor as there is a huge amount of conflict arising in today’s community regarding the consumption of livestock, and hemp produce could very well outweigh the possibilities of human dependence on animals as their primary source of protein. Vegans usually tend to be extremely health conscious, and in the case of deriving their protein from hemp, they need not be worried about the source, as it is completely natural and organic. This is unlike whey protein, which is extracted from milk. As discussed earlier, vegans do not consume dairy. So, what is the difference between whey protein, soya protein and hemp protein? For starters, excessive consumption of whey protein can lead to bloating, stomach cramps, and diarrhea. It is also not an option for those who are lactose intolerant. Excessive consumption of whey protein can also potentially lead to intestinal toxemia. Soya, on the other hand contains oligosaccharides, which can cause gas and stomach issues. Most soya products are treated with hexane and are usually genetically modified (unless mentioned otherwise). Another major drawback

  2. of protein derived from soya is that since it is heated during production, it gives less of a chance for the proteins to act well as enzymes. Moving forward, vegetables and fruits are rich in fiber, which constitute one part of a vegan’s diet. It is however extremely important that one consumes a balanced diet. Therefore, for the protein bit, hemp is an extremely suitable source, convenient, easy to digest, and extremely healthy. Hemp seeds are not just a source of protein, but also contain some of the most essential fibers and fatty acids, which most protein powders do not have. Hemp protein contains omega – 3 and omega – 6 fatty acids in a perfectly balanced 3:1 ratio. Omega – 3 is extremely important because you can’t find it in many foods and your body needs the right balance between polyunsaturated and saturated fats. Unfortunately, most people consume a lot of saturated fats which lack omega – 3. A typical Western diet provides an unbalanced 15:1 ratio of these fats, and has been linked to many chronic diseases, including heart disease and cancer. Apart from this, hemp protein is pleasurable to the taste buds. In terms of nutrients, hemp seeds contain a huge number of micronutrients like iron, calcium, sodium, vitamin E, vitamin D, vitamin C, vitamin B1, B2, B6 and vitamin A. In a study conducted by Chinese experts, it was found that vegans are open to threats of heart disease, obesity, blood pressure and diabetes. An intake of hemp protein was one of the suggested methods of coping with potential health threats for vegans! Hemp protein has helped people deal with various diseases like high blood pressure, obesity, skin allergies and heart problems, vegan or not. Briefly outlining the beneficial properties of hemp as one of the most elemental sources of protein for people from all backgrounds and walks of life, we arrive at a number of points, some of which have discussed and elaborated above. It helps deal with skin disorders, keeps the skin healthy, increases metabolism, and offers iron, magnesium, zinc, which are mineral components of nails, and omega-3 fatty acids, which have been shown to boost healthy growth of nails. Hemp protein acts a great immunity booster, providing you with a complete and thorough package of nutrients and minerals. The balanced omega – 6 to omega – 3 ratio aids majorly in reducing inflammation. In addition, hemp seeds are a rich source of gamma linolenic acid (GLA), a polyunsaturated fatty acid which may also have anti- inflammatory effects. Hemp seeds are a great source of iron. This oxygen transport helps provide you with energy, especially as the day progresses. Iron also contributes to the

  3. normal formation of red blood cells which help reduce tiredness and fatigue throughout the day, keeping you energized. It has also been proven that hemp protein helps athletes recover after exertion. In other words, it helps in the repairing of muscles. Researchers have found that the amino acids in hydrolysed protein supplements are highly suitable for musclerepair after muscle fiber damaging exercise and other causes of muscle injury. Of the nine essential amino acids, leucine, isoleucine and valine make up the three BCAAs. Hemp protein contains 6.8% leucine, 4.5% isoleucine and 5.6% valine. Research has shown BCAAs can stimulate muscle protein synthesis or muscle growth and speed up post-workout recovery by reducing muscle soreness. Lastly, consumption of hemp seeds aids in digestion, due to its richness in fibres.
