  1. WW1- Leading Up To War & Causes

  2. MAIN(Militarism, Alliances, Imperialism, Nationalism) • Pre WW1 Europe • Military might and the desire to conquest areas is well known. Think about how they colonized parts of the world through military might • European Nations engaged in a series of Alliances with each other in secret(more on this to come). • We know they were Imperializing and colonizing all over the world, scrambling to take over places such as Africa • Nationalism was feverous throughout the countries and pride/desire to make your country the best was at an all time high.

  3. Tangled Alliances- Europe 1914

  4. A Lasting Distrust • Due to years of conflict in Europe there were great tensions between different countries in Europe • This leads to a tangle of alliances between all the powerful European nations. Each one secretly allied to another. • These treaties were a powder keg waiting to explode and were just waiting on a spark to ignite the fire…..

  5. Archduke Franz Ferdinand is Assassinated • June 28, 1914 • Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife visit Sarajevo, Bosnia • Ferdinand is the heir to the Austrian-Hungry throne • Is very disliked in Bosnia for his treatment of the Serbians • Upon arrival a grenade was thrown at his car in a failed attempt to assassinate him.

  6. The Black Hand • A Serbian group called the Black hand plans to kill Ferdinand on this visit. • GavriloPrincip shot Ferdinand and his wife Sophie • Lets look at a first hand account of this event. • This simple act was the spark needed to suck Europe into war…. • Lets revisit the map and our tangled alliances. • We will conclude with looking at some more of the major players.

  7. Your mission • Now that you have a basic idea you need to investigate further why Franz Ferdinand was assassinated. I have given you a taste but not the full picture. Come prepared to discuss why his policies led to the Serbians wanting him dead. • Visit www.firstworldwar.com and you will find a wealth of information.
