Think about how they colonized parts of the world through military might • European Nations engaged in a series of Alliances with each other in secret(more on this to come). • We know they were Imperializing and colonizing all over the world, scrambling to take over places such as Africa • Nationalism was feverous throughout the countries and pride/desire to make your country the best was at an all time high.
A Lasting Distrust • Due to years of conflict in Europe there were great tensions between different countries in Europe • This leads to a tangle of alliances between all the powerful European nations. Each one secretly allied to another. • These treaties were a powder keg waiting to explode and were just waiting on a spark to ignite the fire…..
Archduke Franz Ferdinand is Assassinated • June 28, 1914 • Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife visit Sarajevo, Bosnia • Ferdinand is the heir to the Austrian-Hungry throne • Is very disliked in Bosnia for his treatment of the Serbians • Upon arrival a grenade was thrown at his car in a failed attempt to assassinate him.
