  1. World History Unit 10 Current Issues Presentation: Creation and Presence of Israel Friday, May 13th , 2011 Mrs. Blackburn Pd. 2 By Jamie Norz

  2. Issue • Israel became a country in 1948. They finally had their own land, but the Muslims want to take it . The Muslims believe they have a right to the area because they settled there first and because it is their holy land. • The Jews try to defend their right to live there, but the Muslims constantly try to push them out so that they can retake Israel

  3. Map and Location of Israel The large area on the map between Jordan and Israel is not part of Israel. It is another country called the West Bank.

  4. Images of Israel The Coat of Arms of Israel Chart showing religions practiced in Israel today Flag of Israel

  5. Images People celebrating Israel’s Independence Day (May 14th) Israeli Tanks used by Israel’s Armed Forces People making religious pilgrimages to Israel

  6. Israel Facts • Israel became a country in 1948 • The Israelis gained their land from Great Britain • Israel’s Independence Day is on May 14th • Israel requires military service from all citizens • Israel has been in conflict with the Palestinians since they became a country and are still fighting today • Israel has defended itself successfully from several attacks by the Palestinians to reclaim the land • Israel was the first Jewish state

  7. Argument • I believe that the Israelis have a right to the land and the Palestinians shouldn’t just claim that the land belongs to them and try to take it

  8. Supporting Ideas • There is physical evidence that the Israelis settled in the area over 3000 years ago, before the Palestinians and their claims of settlement • The land there is not only holy land to the Palestinians ( Part Christian, Part Muslim, and Part Jewish) • The Jewish people did not have a homeland before Israel and they deserve to have one

  9. Quiz Questions • When did the Jews first settle in Palestine? • Why do the Palestinians say they deserve the land and not the Israelis? • When did Israel become an independent nation?
