  1. Groundhog Job Shadow Day(GJSD) Come February 2 will our students see their futures?

Why GJSD? • GJSD connects the business community with the local educational system. • GJSD introduces students to real-life work environments in a particular field of interest. • Job shadowing is an excellent way for youth to see what actually goes on in the workplace, and a great opportunity to ask questions of adults on the job. • Research shows that students who job shadow will be more positive about their future, more likely to complete high school, attend and graduate college, and become productively employed.

Job shadowing… • Demonstrates the connection between academics and careers, exciting students about learning by making their school work more relevant • Introduces students to the requirements of professions and industries to help them prepare to join the workforce of the 21st century • Encourages an ongoing relationship between young people and caring adults. • Builds community partnerships between schools and businesses that enhance the educational experience of all students

  4. General Guidelines • Job shadowing is considered part of a student’s education, not an escape from it • There is pre-planning, along with specific expectations for the experience and follow up activities that school staff may require • Students generally spend 2 – 4 hours on-site • Many details will vary by community and school district

  5. Next Steps? • Find interested parties who can help make this happen • Gather information about participants • Students (schools, communities, career paths) • Employers (community organizations, hosts) • School staff (administrator support, detail management) • Gather known resources; develop/adapt materials to assist schools (forms, activities, lists of willing shadow hosts, etc)
