  4. Ecuador, about equal in area to Nevada, is in the northwest part of South America fronting on the Pacific. To the north is Colombia and to the east and south is Peru. Two high and parallel ranges of the Andes, traversing the country from north to south, are topped by tall volcanic peaks. The highest is Chimborazo at 20,577 ft . The Galápagos Islands in the Pacific Ocean about 600 miles west of the South American mainland, became part of Ecuador in 1832.

  5. Typical meal • Ecuadorian cuisine traditionally consists of two dishes, a soup and a rice platter. For the most part, Ecuador is known not only for its bananas and all the dishes made from them, but for its starch consumption of products like potato, bread, rice, and yuca. Traditionally any of these factors can be found in either the soup or the rice platter that may be served. Most regions in Ecuador follow the traditional 3 course meal of sopa (soup) and segundo (second dish) which includes rice and a protein such as meat, poultry, pig or fish. Then dessert and a coffee are customary. Dinner is usually lighter and sometimes just coffee or agua de remedio (herbal tea) with bread.

  7. In Ecuador, the Day of the Dead is observed to some extent by all parts of society, though it is especially important to the indigenous Kichwa peoples who make up an estimated quarter of the population. Indigena families gather together in the community cemetery with offerings of food for a day-long remembrance of their ancestors and lost loved ones.

  8. Girls tend to be more protected by their parents than boys, due to traditional social structures. At age 15, girls often have traditional parties called a fiesta de pollo quince. Quinceañera is a term used for the girl, not the party. The party involves festive food and dance. This is a coming out party or debutante where the girl is now of age. This is a tradition found in most Latin American countries and is comparable to the American tradition of sweet sixteen parties.

  10. A Panama hat is a traditional brimmed hat of Ecuadorian origin that is made from the plaited leaves of the toquilla straw plant .  Straw hats woven in Ecuador, like many other 19th and early 20th century South American goods, were shipped first to the Isthmus of Panama before sailing for their destinations in Asia, the rest of the Americas and Europe. For some products, the name of their point of international sale rather than their place of domestic origin stuck, hence "Panama hats."
