  1. Chapter 5 Global Opportunities For Canadians

  2. Chapter Issue How should we respond to the opportunities that globalization provides for identities?

  3. Think about… How does globalization create new opportunities for identity? Look at the two articles on page 72. What do the articles say about opportunities being created in Canada for new immigrants?

  4. Accommodation, Acculturation and Integration • Accommodation involves making adjustments for reaching a compromise to allow for differences • Integration provides equal opportunity for participation in different groups in society • Acculturation is the process of adapting to a new society

  5. Adjusting to High School

  6. Migration to Cities In 2001, the United Nations Centre for Human Settlements predicted that more than 60% of the world’s population will live in towns and cities by 2030. What might be some reasons for this? Why might people want to live in cities?

  7. Urbanization Urbanization is the process by which so many people move into rural areas close to cities that these areas become urban (Airdrie, Carstairs) Metropolis: A large, busy city, especially the main city of a country or region (Edmonton is the metropolis for Northern Alberta, Calgary for central) Megacity: an urban centre with a population of 10 million or more

  8. Page 94 Look at figure 5-2 on page 94. Where are the most megacities found? Why do you think they are found there?

  9. Opportunities in Urban Centers Cities around the world have become important centers for business, industry, technology, politics and culture. Urban populations continue to grow. Immigrant populations contribute to the development of cities. What accommodations might immigrants to Canada require?

  10. Opportunities for New Canadians • Integration occurs when people who are new to a society become accepted members of the community • They obtain jobs, learn one or both of Canada’s official languages and respect Canadian laws • This process of changing as a result of contact with other groups is acculturation.

  11. Immigration • Canada wants to encourage skilled workers from around the world to immigrate here. Potential immigrants are judged on 6 selection factors: education, official languages, experience, age, arranged employment and adaptability • Could YOU pass the test? Let’s see…

  12. Test For Immigration • http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/assess/Education.asp

  13. Activity • In a paragraph, describe which factors you think are most important for immigrants to have when coming to a country. Explain which of the 6 selection factors refer to a potential immigrant’s ability to become integrated into Canadian society. • To be handed in

  14. Affirmation of Identity Affirmations of identity are ways that people or groups assert themselves in their community Whenever you acknowledge what it means to you to belong to a particular family, age group, gender, club or team, or family heritage, you affirm your identity.
