  4. 4- Understanding New Words in a Reading • Sometimes the meaning of a new word is in the sentence before or after the word, • Example: I apologized to my friend. I said, “I’m really sorry about yesterday.” (Apologize means to say you’re sorry about something.) • Sometimes the meaning is after the phrase in other words. • Example: He has a low place in the hierarchy, in other words, the system from low to high. (Hierarchy means the system from low to high)

  11. Part 3Practical English • Using Inclusive Language • UNDERSTANDING GENDER-NEUTRAL LANGUAGE Most people now say fire fighter and mail carrier to include both men and women. To make language more equal, or gender-neutral, people are changing many words and the way that we use some language.

  13. Using Gender-Neutral Possessive Adjectives • Possessive adjectives show gender: his is used for male, her is used for female. Sometimes the noun doesn’t show the gender, so we can say his or her, or make the noun plural and use the possessive adjective their (which can be male or female). • Examples: • Every student should remember his book. • Every student should remember his/her book. • Students should remember their books.
