  1. WORLD LITERATURENOVEMBER 3, 2011 Choose the best answer for each of the following slides. You only have to write down the question number and the letter, not the actual answer. • Which of the following pieces of evidence would best support the idea that Oedipus is a helpful leader? a. “I came by, Oedipus the ignorant, and I stopped the Sphinx.” b. “I grieve for these, my people, far more than I fear for my own life.” c. “I am ready to help, I’ll do anything.” d. “My children, I pity you. I see– how could I fail to see what longings you bring here?”

  2. WORLD LITERATURENOVEMBER 3, 2011 2. Which of the following explanations best explains what the following quote reveals about Oedipus’ admirable trait: “I am ready to help; I’ll do anything” • Since Oedipus claims that he is willing to do anything to help, this reveals that he truly would like to assist in eliminating the plague and that he is a helpful leader who desires to do all that he can for his people. • This quote reveals that Oedipus cares deeply about his people and that he feels their pain as they go through this plague. He mourns for them just as much as they mourn. • Here, Oedipus is talking to his people and he then tells them that he is concerned about them. He makes Creon go find out what the Oracle says about the plague. Then, he hopes that they will find out how to solve the plague.

  3. WORLD LITERATURENOVEMBER 3, 2011 3. Which of the following topic sentences would be best to discuss Oedipus’ admirable trait: • The first trait that this paragraph will prove is that Oedipus is a helpful king. • First of all, he is a very helpful king. • The first trait that reveals that Oedipus is a tragic hero is his admirable trait– his helpfulness. • First, Oedipus has many traits; some of these traits are noble while some of these traits are hamartias.

  4. WORLD LITERATURENOVEMBER 3, 2011 4. Now, turn to an elbow partner. For question 4, write down your elbow partner’s name. Then, write down the responses that they got for question 1-3.
