  4. Changes at CWRU • Student Affairs to Enrollment Management • Presidential mandate to change orientation model from a summer session model to a week-long model • Move in physical office locations • Downsized staff • Creation of a first-year experience office and model

Kotter’s 8-Step Model- An Overview • Leadership and change management guru, John Kotter • Introduced eight-step change process in the book, Leading Change • Methodology for dealing with large changes • Based on extensive research which defined an eight-step pattern associated with highly successful change efforts

  7. 1) Create a Sense of Urgency • The why and why now? • Importance and benefits of change • Be prepared for criticism, skepticism, and challenge • Lookout for support, allies, positivity, ideas

  8. 2) Pull together a guiding team • Change is a team sport • Refer back to allies, positivity, ideas – and some challengers, too! • Build the team – communicate, involve, find commonalities

  10. 3) Develop a change vision and strategy • What will be different and how will you make it happen? • May take some time! • Utilize team- expertise, brainstorming, research, assessment, benchmarking – NODA! • Build upon your history

  11. Discussion Questions • Why the change and why now? • What roles/attributes are needed on your team? • Who is your No-No? What is his/her importance on your team? • How will the future be different from the past? • What information, guidance, and research do you need to make your vision a reality?

  12. 4) Communicate for understanding and buy-in • Disseminate the vision and strategy to all • Make sure as many as possible understand, accept, and are ready to act and support it

  13. 5) Empower others to act • Remove barriers so that those who want to make the vision a reality can do so • Know your No-Nos

  14. 6) Produce short-term wins • People need to see progress towards the vision – create them as soon as possible

  15. Discussion Questions • How will you communicate your vision andwhat strategies would you implore to create buy-in? • Which constituencies will create the most challenges? How will you overcome them? • Who will you need to empower? What are their barriers? • What is the biggest opportunity to create a short-term win?

  16. 7) Don’t let up • Persevere through early success and continued challenges until the vision is a reality

  17. 8) Create a new culture • Hold onto new ways of behaving, making sure they succeed until they are strong enough to replace old traditions

  18. Discussion Questions • How can you keep internally motivated? • How can you continue to motivate your team and constituencies? • How will you celebrate success? • How will you continue progressing?
