  3. ASKNet (The African Sanitation Knowledge Network)

  4. How ASKNet started 2007 - meeting on sustainable sanitation with academics from Africa & Europe (Entebbe, Uganda) Recommendations: • To enhance the profile of African academia in the field of water and in particular sanitation • To increase the skills of young professionals to manage projects

  5. How ASKNet started 2008 - ASKNet was launched at the AfricaSan + 5 conference in Durban, (February 18 – 2008)

  6. Objectives • Education Increase the numbers of professionals skilled in sustainable sanitation from African educational institutes. • Research Enhance the relevance, quality and profile of sustainable sanitation research in Africa. • Outreach Promote sustainable sanitation and it´s implementation in Africa.

  7. Mission of the network • ASKNet aims to enhance the ability of academics and professionals across the disciplines to contribute to the mainstreaming and up-scaling of sustainable sanitation in Africa, to the benefit of livelihoods, health and the environment.

  8. Done so far • 2008 - 1st networking event held in (Vilanculos, Mozambique, December 2008) • Platform for professionals of various backgrounds to share good and bad practices on education in sanitation • Four educational modules on sanitation drafted for university teaching (on health, social aspects, reuse aspects and project management)

  10. Done so far • Result of Vilanculos meeting: Establishment of BSc course on Water & Sanitation (UEM, Vilankulos,Mozambique)

  11. Involvement of members in the development ofstudent centredon-line Sanitation Modules at Post-graduate level at UNESCO- IHE Involvement of members in the development of a BSc course in Management in Sanitation (University of Leeuwarden, The Netherlands)
