DELTA Literacy Initiative Student Priorities Students will… • Leverage their reading, writing, & speaking in order to… • demonstrate the depth of their thoughts • build toward lives rich with options & happiness. Own their learningby taking responsibility for the majority of the reading, writing, thinking, and talking during class time & by knowing and problem-solving around progress throughout the year. READ the measures for next year. -How do these measures remedy some of the problems we already thought through? -What new problems will arise?

Literacy Initiative Learning Team Structures • All ELA teachers are in one room with all LTLs. • Opening and Community Building • Teachers arrive and engage in icebreakers/ S-celebration with unfamiliar teachers. 10 min. Problem-Solving Groups (Catchier name?) 4 teachers meet in same group each month (teacher-chosen). Teachers engage in “portfolio review protocol” for two of their group members. Teachers problem-solve & set next steps for next time. Teachers reflect on their own classroom. 50 min. Reading Club & Writing Club Groups Teachers (pre) write/read text chosen by another teacher in group the preceding month. Teachers talk, respond, & argue. Teachers practice/ grow as doers of literacy. 30 min.

  3. Literacy Initiative ProSat Structures • All ELA teachers in one room with all LTLs. Opening and Community Building Problem-Solving Groups Reading Club, Writing Club Literacy Newsletter (Mostly through the TFA-Delta-ELA blog): One (or shared) LTL recruits & publishes solutions from problem-solving groups & from courses. • Teachers break into separate rooms. • Intro to ELA: Pedagogy & Student-ownership • Staff-led • Focus on a prioritized student-level-gap & aligned teacher mindsets, habits, and skills for effectively teaching literacy. • Modified 2011 Fall Curriculum • Attended by 1st year teachers and 2nd year teachers who opt in. • Courses • LTL-led discussions & problem-solving sessions to develop 2nd year teachers in various ways. • Some topic themes of potential courses: • 1. Novel Studies/ Thematic Studies • 2. Community & District PARTNERSHIPS • 3. Creative writing & Research writing • 4. Phonics & IR
