Dates and Occurences • Britain destroyed the Dutch hold on west Africa trade • Britain established trading posts and oil rigs throughout the country adding to their own natural resources • Emigrant Nationalist Movement: led by business people promoting economical and political gain from independence • The Great Depression and World War II reduced Britain’s investment, imports, and government spending in Nigeria

  4. Motives for Imperialism • Q: What was Great Britain’s gaining control of Nigeria? • A: Great Britain wanted to gain control of Nigeria for economical purposes. Great Britain wanted to add to their natural resources using Nigeria’s own natural resources including their oil

  5. Control • Q: How did Great Britain gain control over Nigeria? • A: Great Britain used a form of direct rule by eliminating the Dutch from the territory and claim it as their own

  6. Response to Colonization • The Nigerians demanded more participation in the colonial government • They wanted to make break up the country into different ethnic and religious regions

  7. Independence • Nigeria was able to gain their independence in 1960 • After freeing themselves from Great Britain, Nigeria faced many problems in their government including more than three coup d’ etats and a civil war
