  6. SWBAT… Discuss upcoming issues and themes of Of Mice and Men Examine what the American dream is.

  7. Finish discussion using the anticipation guide… • Remember: stand up if you DISAGREE and arms up if you agree. 1. The N-word is more offensive than other racial slurs because of the history of hate behind it. 2. Life today is more difficult than it used to be for our parents and grandparents 3. Killing another human being can sometimes be justifiable, especially if it will put that person out of their misery 4. Anyone can achieve their dreams if they work hard enough for it.

  8. Write for three minutes straight on the following question... What is the AmericanDream?

  9. Here’s what some singers have to say… • Frank Sinatra “New York New York” • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lnNhNqtX1t4 • Jay Z and Alicia Keys “Empire State of Mind” • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=weLbgF-f_u4

  10. The next two books we read will be about the American Dream (Of Mice and Men and the Great Gatsby…) • Though these books have other themes as well that we will be discussing, it does give us a good look at what the American dream used to be. • Throughout this session, think about what the American dream is nowadays– is it the same as it was back then? Is it different?

  11. HW: • Vocab 7 due tomorrow • I HIGHLY recommend that you do the comma, colon, semi-colon practice sheet. It’s a different one than last time even though it looks similar.

  12. Exit: • Tell me one thing you found interesting today that someone else spoke about during discussion or about the American dream.
