  2. Do-now: • Sit down, take out your homework (Chapter 7 part 2 questions) and begin on the subject-verb quiz.

  3. Tip of the day: • Correct or incorrect? I would rather go for a walk outside than have to stay on the treadmill. • CORRECT: *THAN is a comparative word. • Correct or incorrect? I was very weary about whether to trust the creepy man at the park. • INCORRECT: Should be WARY- cautious (not weary- tired) • Tip #12: Saw/seen. Only use “seen” when you have a helping verb before it (have, was, been, etc.). Otherwise use saw. • INCORRECT: I seen One Direction and they were amazing! • CORRECT: I have seen One Direction and they were amazing! • CORRECT: I saw One Direction and they were amazing!

Vocab 10: • traverse (v) • It’s been my dream to traverse a rainforest and see everything I can. • inexplicable (adj) • Every time she took a test, for some inexplicable reason, her mind would go blank and she couldn’t remember anything; she couldn’t figure out why this was happening to her. • incoherent (adj) • The castaway who survived for months out at sea finally made it back to land and mostly made sense when he spoke, but at times was incoherent too.

  8. dissent (v) • Though most of the class wanted more homework, a few students dissented and thought they already had enough. • juxtaposition (N) • The bright white swans on the dark, almost black, water created a nice juxtaposition and really highlighted how white and pure the swans looked. • obstinate (adj) • No matter how much her classmates tried to convince her that Justin Bieber was not a good role model, she remained obstinate and would not give up her argument that he was the best singer she’d ever heard. • scrutiny (adj) • Despite all of the scrutiny that Jennifer Lawrence received about being too “heavy” to play a starved Hunger Games character, Jennifer Lawrence didn’t let any of the criticism affect her.

Vocab 10 cont’d • cohesive • When her paper jumped from topic to topic, writing on everything from gun control laws to evolution to Justin Bieber, Ms. Stitt told her to work on making her paper more cohesive to help it make sense. • provoke (v) • “Ah!” yelled Sarah, “There’s a bear! Don’t provoke him– let’s move away from him as slowly and quietly as we can, we don’t want to make him upset.” • deft (adj) • Rumpelstiltskin was so deft with his hands in spinning straw into gold that he was able to save the Queen’s life by spinning all of the straw into gold in just one night.

  10. Review the HW: • After Tom and Gatsby fight over Daisy, why does Tom want Gatsby and Daisy to drive back home together? • Who caused the accident? How do you know? • Who was driving? • At the end of the chapter, Nick gets a glimpse of Tom and Daisy talking. What do we learn from this moment? • Any questions?
