  2. Do-Now Re-write the following sentence. Underline all of the nouns in the following sentence and circle all of the verbs. There are 5 nouns and 3 verbs. Ms. Stitt has high hopes that her students will do well in English class this year. **Announcement: Ms. Stitt will be putting up powerpoint slides onto the following website (NO WWW) http://nstitt.wordpress.com

SWBAT: • Use context to determine a word’s meaning. • 3.12.1 Use context (e.g. the overall meaning of a sentence, paragraph, or test; a word’s position or function in a sentence) as a clue to the meaning of increasingly difficult words or phrases • Identify the steps of the writing process • Working toward standard 9.11.1 Independently apply the steps of a writing process tailored to writing task. • Defend three chosen character traits. • 7.11.1 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as matters that are ambiguous. • Working toward 7.11.6 Analyze the impact of the author’s choices regarding how to develop elements of a story or drama (e.g. where a story is set, how the action is ordered, how the characters are introduced and developed)

  5. Vocabulary 1 • Every week you will be given 10 new vocabulary words. • This week ONLY you will have 5 words (get used to it and shorter week) • Every THURSDAY is when your vocabulary is due. • Every Friday you will have a quiz. You are responsible for knowing previous words as well.

  6. What to Include on Vocab HW: • You will include… • Guess of what you think the word means • Definition of the word • A CONTEXT-FILLED sentence with the word • A picture of the word • Every Thursday we will do “charades” where different people will act out the vocab word in the best way they can. More on this on Thursday.

Vocab 1 LIST: • amiable (adj) • Everyone loves being around Johnny, as his amiable manner puts everyone around him at ease and makes them feel comfortable. • candid (adj) • Some appreciate how candid Sarah is and know that they can ask her anything if they want to know the real answer, but others sometimes become offended by this candor. • scathing (adj) • The reporter gave a scathing rundown of every wicked thing the mob boss had done and held nothing back, not even attempting to make the mob boss appear human.

Vocab 1 cont’d 4. presumptuous (adj) • Being the presumptuous young man that he was, Clyde went to pick up his prom date thinking that no one could ever reject him, but found that she was already gone with someone else. 5. onerous (adj) • Jeremy couldn’t believe he had the onerous task of babysitting his sister yet again; he had already taken her to the movies with his friends three times in the last month!

Using the text to defend what you’re saying. “…only 15 percent of female college freshmen plan to major in science, technology, engineering and math.” With your partner, write as many different possible arguments that you could make using this quote as support (even if you don’t truly believe the argument… what are arguments that COULD potentially be made?)

  11. Using Text as support Highlight a place in the text that could defend each of the following arguments: • Women need to have more confidence in their abilities • Single-sex schools are more beneficial than co-ed schools. • Women struggle much more than men to make decent salaries.

  12. HOMEWORK: JESSE HOMEWORK: • Write three words total on three different sticky notes (or small papers) that describe Jesse so far. • Find different places in the text that support your word for Jesse. • (e.g. if you choose “mean” for a word to describe Jesse, find a place in the text where he is mean and stick your note in there.) • Write ONE sentence for each sticky note explaining why you chose that quote. VOCAB 1.

  13. Exit: • Write one question you have about anything in the class so far. (You may write more than one) • Then write the 5 steps of the writing process in the correct order
