  4. Features • Realistic centaur musculature • Idealistic (unreal) musculature for the man • Deep set eyes (not almond)

  5. Background • Clothing is carved in background rather than on the statue • This shows him to be a hero • Gives impression of movement • Impressionistic • Other than the clothing the background is plain

  6. Woodford Says… • ‘(centaur)…seems very natural, an impression enhanced by the meticulous carving of the veins on the belly’ • ‘Yet the amount of detail is limited and broad areas are only slightly modulated’ • (Page 116)
