  1. Safety Procedures What is a MSDS and Why do I need to know?

  2. Safety Rap Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJG0ir9nDtc

  3. MSDS • MSDS stands for Material Safety Data Sheet • Explains everything you need to know about a chemical and more • It tells you: What it looks and smells like How safe or dangerous is What protective equipment you need if you’re around it

  4. What it tells you cont’d first aid if you get it on you fire fighting info if it catches on fire what to do if you spill it how to handle and store it its chemical and physical properties its stability/reactivity toxicity disposal and transport if it’s regulated

  5. MSDS Divided into 16 Sections • Same sections for all chemicals • See example Calcium Chloride • Will post one or more MSDS up for each lab we do this year

  6. PROJECT: MSDS Student • Your job is to create a MSDS for yourself. It must reflect your personality, habits, likes, and dislikes. Yes, it can be funny but it must be appropriate and tasteful. It will be up on the wall for all to see, even your parents on Meet the Teacher night! Information should be presented using scientific terminology. Include a picture of yourself, the element (10 points). The characteristics under each property are only meant to be a guide; you may use them all or add more. Your MSDS must be the front of one page, no more, no less. Be creative and colorful (20 points). • The following information must be found on your MSDS. • Element Name: 10 points • Atomic mass: 5 points • Symbol: 5 points • Discoverer(s): 5 points • Occurrence: 5 points (Highly concentrated deposits located in… Extremely low quantities in…) • Physical Properties: (20 points) • Surface properties • Boils when… • Melts if… • Can cause _________ if… • Specimens can be found in various states (emotions and what causes them)… • Becomes stubborn and unyielding when… • Chemical Properties: (20 points) • Is repelled by… • Is attracted to… • May explode spontaneously if… • Requires copious amounts of… • Is inert if… • Will repel… • Is unaffected by… • Total Possible Points: 100 • Remember, be creative!! You can use a computer to make it or do a cut-and-paste collage. This project counts as a lab grade. Due TUESDAY 9/3/13

  7. Patricia L. Smith MSDSPLS • Mass: 77 kg. Low occurence: Eating asparagus, watching reality TV, cleaning the house. • PHYSICAL PROPERTIES • Surface Properties: Brown hair with highlights, brown eyes • Boils when: students hand in blank homework/classwork and refuse to try, people are mean to their pets, the computer and smart board refuse to work correctly

  8. Melts when: students get what I am trying to teach in Chemistry, getting to spend time with my 3 boys who live in Oklahoma, watching Katy Tiger and Oklahoma Sooners football, fishing (and catching!) big redfish in Matagorda Bay • Can cause headaches if: Students aren’t doing their work! • Specimen can be found in: Katy, TX; Matagorda, TX; Norman, OK, Oklahoma City, OK; Edmond, OK • Can Cause Laughter when: She tells one of her favorite Chemistry Cat Jokes

  9. CHEMICAL PROPERTIES • Is Repelled By: Blank homework and classwork documents • Is Attracted to: My husband Rocky, Katy and O.U. Football, Fishing, the Beach, Sunsets in Matagorda • May Explode Spontaneously if: Her computer and smart board aren’t in a good relationship, a student refuses to do any work! • Requires Copious Amounts of: Unsweet Tea and Mexican Food • Is Inert when: On the beach with my favorite family friends listening to the waves and watching my dogs while the sun is setting • Will Repel: Lame excuses, cell phones during class • Is Unaffected by: “The dog ate my homework!” “I was just too tired to do it!” “I can’t do this.
