  2. GENERAL SAFETY RULES FOR INDUSTRIAL ARTS SHOP Wear eye protection AT ALL TIMES OVER YOUR EYESwhen you are in the shop area. Keep your work area clean and free from all small scraps, excessive sawdust and oil. Always remove nails from boards, especially pieces that have been removed for repairs/ remodeling. YOU could step on a nail! Do not wear loose fitting clothing in shop. No coats or jackets will be allowed in the shop.

  3. GENERAL SAFETY RULES FOR INDUSTRIAL ARTS SHOP (cont.) Students are required to take off loose sweat-shirts & sweaters. Shirts under these clothes MUST follow the STUDENT DRESS CODE. StudentsMUST ROLL UP any long sleeved shirts/ sweatshirts while working in the shop. Students must remove any loose jewelry. ALL TEACHER DECISIONS ARE FINAL! Since we may work with heavy pieces of wood or metal, always wear sturdy shoes. ABSOLUTELY NO FLIP-FLOPS /SANDALS!

  4. GENERAL SAFETY RULES FOR INDUSTRIAL ARTS SHOP (cont.) You must share the tools with your class. Put tools away when you are done working with them. Don’t keep all the tools at your table. Keep tables of machines and other work surfaces free of nails and other materials including tools. These can scratch projects. Never try to move materials past a person who is using a tool, power tool, or machine. Take a different path to where you are going

  5. GENERAL SAFETY RULES FOR INDUSTRIAL ARTS SHOP (cont.) Follow the safety procedures recommended for each tool, power tool, or machine. Pay attention to the teacher demonstrations. STUDENTS WILL NOT BE TALKING DURING TEACHER DEMONSTRATIONS! Make sure machines come to a complete stop before picking them up or touching them. Wear a dust respirator when sanding if you are allergic to dust.See Mr. Mackereth.

  6. GENERAL SAFETY RULES FOR INDUSTRIAL ARTS SHOP (cont.) Never hold small pieces of wood in your hand while you cut. Always lock your work in a vice. Always use the guards on machines when provided. If a standard guard is not available, one can be made from clamping devices. Check with Mr. Mackereth if you have any questions about tools or machines. WHEN IN DOUBT, ASK THE TEACHER !

  7. GENERAL SAFETY RULES FOR INDUSTRIAL ARTS SHOP (cont.) Always keep tools and equipment in top condition. Report any broken or damaged tools, or unsafe conditions to Mr. Mackereth. Don’t just stick dull tools in the cabinet! Keep material neatly stacked in the shop. This includes inside the storage cabinets. Make sure all tools are sharp and in good working order. Always carry pointed objects down and away from your body.

  8. GENERAL SAFETY RULES FOR INDUSTRIAL ARTS SHOP (cont.) Plan your work before you begin. THINK BEFORE YOU ACT.Always have instructor check your set up before you begin to work. NEVER work on machines if you are not feeling well or tired. Talk to Mr. Mackereth. Accidents happen when someone tires to do things too fast. NEVER BE IN A HURRY! Get first aid for even the slightest scratch. Always tell Mr. Mackerethabout any injury that occurs when you are working in shop.

  9. GENERAL SAFETY RULES FOR INDUSTRIAL ARTS SHOP (cont.) Keep your fingers and hands out of the way of sharp edged cutting tools. Someone might bump into you, and you may get cut. Do not run, jump, push, argue, or pick on others in shop. DO NOT MISBEHAVE IN SHOP! You will behave just like ladies & gentlemen (GROWN-UP, ADULTS) when you are in shop. Know the location of the fire extinguishers and fire exits in your shop.Watch Mr. Mackereth

  10. ANY QUESTIONS? You must now PASSa SAFETY QUIZ on all of the information presented on these slides. Out of 33 points, 28 questions will be of the SAFE or UNSAFE format. For example: “Carry pointed objects out in front of you.” Answer: UNSAFE, carry them DOWN & AWAY! An ESSAY question worth 5 pts will require you to describe a SAFE SHOP STUDENT. Answersmust be at least 5 COMPLETE SENTENCES! 1 sentence MUST discuss EYE PROTECTION
