Center • The last chapter we estimated the center by looking at the distribution • Now, we will summarize the center of the distribution by actually calculating the mean or median • Median – The middle value • Is resistant to extreme values • Mean– The average • Is pulled towards the extreme values

  3. Spread • Last chapter we only talked about the range • Now • Standard Deviation – a measure of spread • Square root of variance • Interquartile Range (IQR) • Q3 – Q1 • Range

  4. Box plots • 5 Number Summary • Min • Q1 • Median • Q3 • Max • Comparing • Center • Medians (which is higher?) • Spread • IQRs (which is more spread out?) • Outliers? • Calculate the “Fences” • Upper = Q3 + 1.5(IQR) • Lower = Q1 – 1.5(IQR)
