The History of Smokejumping • Forest Service began project in 1984 • Taken over by the University of Montana • Contains approximately 100 taped interviews with transcripts or summaries • Digitization Project • 30 interviews digitized through a BCR Collaborative Digitization Program sound model grant • Goals • Provide archival quality digital copy for preservation • Provide easily streamed version of content for student /faculty research

Choosing A Metadata Schema • Descriptive Metadata • Users need to be able to search by keyword, subject, interviewee, date, time period, location. • Technical Metadata • Accurate representation of original recording and digital versions for preservation purposes • Administrative Metadata • Provide accurate information concerning rights and usage • Consider Interoperability and Semantic Web to increase/maintain future access to collection

Descriptive Metadata • Considerations • Flexibility/Granularity of schema & elements • Compatible with Content DM • Convertable to/from MARC • Ease of use for faculty/staff/student employees • Future expansion possibilities & interoperabilty • Decision Made • Dublin Core (DC) • Metadata Object Description Schema (MODS)

Technical Metadata • Considerations • User friendly for the non-audio specialist • Covers aspects unique to audio and textual materials • Allows description of original and digital objects • Compatible with METS to allow future refinement and expansion of metadata records • Decision • Schema for Technical Metadata for Text (TextMD) • LC-AV Audio Metadata Extension Schema (AudioMD)
