  1. IEEE Computer SocietyCloud ComputingFuture Technologies Sub-Strategy • Irena Bojanova • Chair, Cloud Computing STCFuture Technologies Sub-Strategy, IEEE CS

  2. Agenda – December 03, 2012 • Introductions • Updates • General Discussions • Next Steps • Status by Group http://techsol.tnlexperts.com/2012/02/05/cloud-computing/

  3. Introductions • Name • Location • Group(s) involved with

  4. Updates • Organizational • Leader for Online Presence group – Christine Miyachi • New Leader for Education Group –Dennis to recommend from EAB • Cloud Computing magazine – approved • Draft proposal for Transactions on Big Data • Web site - computer.org/cc - Home page is now focused on attracting volunteers- Meetings’ notes moved to Documents page- Calendar moved to separate page • Brochure – text and images requirements provided to designers • Flyer – new version, need image and fonts from brochure(ideas to post in CCI web portal, CS Volunteers Voices blog, CN blog) • Additional meetings/calls this last week: • San and Jennifer discussed options for advertising in Computer magazine

  5. Updates • Staff • CLOUD 2012 post-production video is released and is posted on IEEE CCI portal • Prototype Cloud Magazine copies will be available at: - CloudConin Taipei - North American Cloud Congress meeting in Anaheim + other CS materials • Interview filming at NACC is being coordinated with ComSoc

  6. General Discussions • Goals for Advertising CS Cloud Computing STC in 2013 So, far input from volunteers shows we consider important all the goals listed here: https://docs.google.com/a/umuc.edu/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0As_t0EYncf20dGdsS09UaDMxVnBmZW9VUzdOWFpacVE&authkey=CIDBgtYD&authkey=CIDBgtYD#gid=33 • Promote CS Cloud Computing STC • Promote STC and CS products • Promote Cloud / Technical conferences that we sponsor • Increase membership • Involve subject matter experts (SMEs) - as authors for NL and BoK • However, staff is asking for one particular goal: “… discuss with your team what goal to focus on - recruitment to the STC, soliciting new products and services, or advertising what the CS has in the Cloud space (or some other goal). … these goals are conflicting, and we would target a marketing plan differently for each of them ...“ “… need some estimates of milestones or major activities to plan around.“

  7. General Discussions • Jia: I would vote for the goal of “Promote CS Cloud Computing STC”It includes: “Promote STC and CS products” and “Promote Cloud / Technical conferences that we sponsor” - We can do the following through various conferences:“Increase membership” and “Involve subject matter experts (SMEs)” • San:Most goals - recruitment to STC, advertising what CS has in Cloud space, promoting products - are complimentary to each other, not conflicting. - What is desired now is a strategy and plan for promoting (I prefer this term rather than marketing) CC STC with primary goals being both publicising CC STC and recruiting/inviting people who are willing to CONTRIBUTE to CC STC. • Chuck: • “To get participants in the effort” • Dennis: We need actual marketing - determining who is interested in cloud computing, and finding out what they care about and want. This is as opposed to promotion or selling, which is trying to convince people to "buy" what we have to offer. • Suggestions for milestones: advertise before large conferences such as CLOUD, eScience, SC, CCEM, ...

  8. General Discussions • Ad in Computer magazineNote: We would use “house ad space”, but very limited number per year. • San considers in very important we to advertise in Computer magazine • Dennis and Don do not recommend if we have to pay (data on promotional methods for a conference, showed ads in magazines were near the bottom) - Who we want to attract? Would non-US audience pay more attention to ads -perhaps because they lack access to the other sources of communication? - Ad would be timely. Once in library, in a few years not our intended audience. • Jiaconsiders it important we to advertise in Computer magazine. CC STC is strongly promoted by CS – so appearing in the CS flagship magazine is a MUST. At the same time, various online channels (e.g., various cloud computing conferences, DBWorld, SEWorld, etc.) will probably gain more attention.

  9. STC Charter, Goals, and Objectives Charter • Provide Information Technology and Enterprise Management with comprehensive, vendor-neutral information that will demystify major cloud-related concerns • (such as ensuring adequate security, framing service level agreements, impacts on staffing, and enabling rapid scaling up and down). Objectives Goals • Branding, marketing, communication • 1. Develop and disseminate CC knowledge • Develop CC educational products • Record and publish CC video products • Develop and promote CS CC standards • Design a CC newsletter • Develop a CC BoK • Coordinate provision of free CC resources • 2. Facilitate CC information exchange • Provide TCS to CC conferences • Establish online presence (for members); social online presence (broader audience) • Collaborate with CC publications, and CC involved CS TCs and STCs, partnering societies, industry and academia • 3. Enable efficient access to CC information • Maintain CC content on STC working area • Contribute content to IEEE CCI Web portal • Contribute CC content to Computing Now • Properly tag all CS CC publications • Request development/reuse of an efficient search engine • Respond to outside requests for guidance • Collaborate with industry fora • Develop guidelines and suggestions on CC government policies and regulations • Create best practices based on CC standards • Create a consultants' clearing house • Create metrics and impact studies of growth of CC in various verticals • 4. Provide CC technical guidance

  10. Next steps • https://docs.google.com/a/umuc.edu/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0As_t0EYncf20dGdsS09UaDMxVnBmZW9VUzdOWFpacVE&authkey=CIDBgtYD&authkey=CIDBgtYD#gid=6 • Important for Volunteers to complete next week • Identify CS TCs and CS STCs, involved in CC activities

  11. Questions • It is the High-Tech Wild, Wild West out there. • Although the CC marketplace is still chaotic, it is: • Exciting • Fast-growing • Full of opportunities
