  2. IEEE Macau Section EEE Activities in Macao Birth, Fast Growth, Maturity Prof. Rui Martins, Chairman R10 Annual Meeting in Adelaide, Australia – April 16th and 17th 2004

  3. Vision and Mission • To foster for Excellence & Technological Innovationin: • Scientific Research and Engineering Development • To enable and boostLocal Members’ Careers • To strengthen the Ties between University and Industry • To promotethe Engineering Processof: • Creating, Developing, Integrating, Sharing, & Applying Knowledge about Electro and Information Technologies and Sciences • To disseminate information about New IT Developmentsby: • Publications, Conferences and Standards

  4. EEE Activities in Macao / Birth • University Background • Before 1981 Engineering Graduates from outside Macao, namely, HK, Portugal, China, Taiwan, USA, UK, and other countries 1981 University of East Asia (3-year private English university) (No Engineering Degrees) 1989Creation of the Faculty of Science and Technology,UEA (4-year Bachelor’s degree in EEE, Software Eng. and later EME) 1991 UEA re-baptized as University of Macau(Public University) 1993First Batch of Graduates in EEE 1994First Batch of Graduates in Software Engineering Beginning of the 1990’s IEEE Members less than 10

  5. Fast Growth • New Developments 1992 to 1996 Incinerator, Airport, Air Macau, Internet from CTM, New Power Plants from CEM, Vodatel and others… 1993 & 1994Starting of Master Programs in EEE and Software Engineering at UM 1996 Starting of Ph.D. Programs in EEE and Software Engineering at UM 6/1996 3rd. International Workshop on Services in Distributed and Networked Environments– organized by FST/UM and the IEEE Technical Committee on Distributed Processing 1998 Creation of IEEE Student Branch at UM 2000 Macao University of Science and Technology (MUST) with Programs (P-Grad)in Information Technology 2000First Ph.D. in FST / UM (and in Macao) in EEE(joint-degree UM-Technical University of Lisbon) 2001 to 2002 3 other Ph.D’s in FST / UM also in EEE Beginning of the 2000’s IEEE Members around 100

  6. Maturity • Consolidated Numbers 1993 to 2003 Close to 550Bachelor degree holders in EEE, Software, and EME(FST / UM) 1993 to 2003 More than 70Master degree holders in EEE, Software, and EME(FST / UM) 1996 to 2002 4 Doctors in EEE(FST / UM) 2000 to 2003 10 Master degree holders in Information Technology(MUST) • High-Standards for Graduation Master Usually 1 paper accepted at IEEE International Conference Several Excellent cases with various papers accepted at IEEE International Conferences and IEEE or IEE Journals Ph.D At least1 or 2 papers at IEEE Int.Conferences and 1 paper in a IEEE or IEE Journal

  7. Excellence in Research • High Level Research Result • Area : Microelectronics Ph.D. work in Electrical and Electronics Engineering Presented and Published in the World Top Conference in the Field [IEEE International Solid-State Circuits Conference – ISSCC, San Francisco, USA, 2002] **Only 2 Universities in China were able to publish in 50 editions of this Conference Hong Kong University of Science and Technology-HKUST & University of Macau-UM** • Technical Contribution for the creation of a Company Chipidea Microelectronics (Macao) • In collaboration with Chipidea Microelectronics -CI (Tagus-Park) Portugal, UM has technically supported the creation of the First Microelectronics Design Center in Macao • The company is managed locally by an Assistant Professor of UM (that has got a joint Ph.D. degree awarded by UM and the Technical University ofLisbon-Portugal), that is now in a regime of no-paid leave • It is already staffed with 20 Electrical and Electronics Engineers graduated in UM that have passed an intensive period of training in CI in Portugal after graduation (Good Ties between University and Company)

  8. Maturity • Scientific References and Publications • To promote High-Level Research work the University of Macau acquired in 2000 theIEEE Xplore Databasethat contains currently more than 1Million Scientific Papers • The Emergence of Master and Ph.D. programs led to the Publication ofNumerous Papersin IEEE International Conferences and Scientific Journals • Main Titles : Journal of Solid-State Circuits, Transactions on Circuits and Systems, Transactions on Power Electronics, Transactions on Instrumentation and Measurement, Proceedings of International Solid-State Circuits Conference, IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking, IEE Electronics Letters.

  9. Maturity • Lab Facilities for Teaching and also Research (FST / UM) 15 Labs in EEE, Software Engineering and EME 5 for Advanced Research Power Electronics, Wireless Communication, Analog and Mixed Signal VLSI, Computer Graphics and Multimedia, and Mechatronics (MUST) 6 Labs in Information Technology 1 for Advanced Research Computer Graphics and Image Processing

  10. Maturity • Science & Technology in Macao 2001 Publication of a Science & Technology Law 2001 Creation of MANETIC (Macao New Technologies Incubator Center) comprising already 16 companies 2002 Creation of a S&T Council at Government level to support activities in the area 2004 Future Creation of a S&T Fund to support R&D at University and Industry

  11. Maturity • IEEE Macau Section 1/2003 Conditions to Start-Up a Local Section Members distributed by several IEEE Regions and Sections – Region 8, Region 10, HK Section, China Section, Taiwan Section, etc… In 2003IEEE Members around150, (considering also Student Members) 9/2003 Petition signed by 50 Members to IEEE Headquarters 14/11/03Approved the Creation of IEEE Macau Section In Region 10 with the Geocode R00097 11/2/04Local Confirmation of Chief Officers for 2004

  12. Plan of Activities for 2004 • Legal Constitution of the Section in Macao • Campaign for Admission of New Members Potential Members close to1000 (considering graduates from other Regions) • Local Promotion of IEEE Activities Worldwide • Support and Boost the Activities of the Student Branch • Cooperate in Organization of Workshops & Conferences (in close connection with Local Institutions & HK Section) Example : 2004 IEEJ International Analog VLSI Workshop – UM, October 2004 Organized by University of Macau and IEEJapan with collaboration of Chipidea (Macao) 2004 Mechatronics and Machine Vision in Practice (M2VIP) – UM, November/December 2004 Organized by City U of HK, IEEE HK Section RACS Joint-Chapter, IEE HK, University of Southern Queensland, University of Macau & Macau Institute of Engineers
