  9. Volunteering Developing critical, non-technical skills that enable you to be more effective professionally Commitment to the Next Generation Enabling low-cost student membership Introduction of engineering and technology to young people worldwide IEEE Global History Network Sponsor of the IEEE Virtual Museum Preservation, research, and dissemination of information about the history of electrical science and technology Technological and organizational history of IEEE, its members, and their professions, in order to increase awareness Role of engineering and technology in the improvement of the quality of life for people throughout the world Mentoring Numerous venues for serving as a trusted advisor Participation in IEEE Mentoring Connection Volunteering & Giving Back to Society

  10. Advancing global prosperity by fostering technological innovation, enabling members' careers and promoting community worldwide GEOSS Linking millions of established national, regional and international sources and datasets into a single network capable of tracking environmental changes in oceans, earth, atmosphere and ecosystems around the world Benefits to society include disaster reduction, health, energy, climate, weather, water and agriculture, among others. IEEE is supporting the development of the GEOSS plan through its Committee on Earth Observation “You are probably aware of the department’s relationship with the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) involving the Group on Earth Observations. This is an intergovernmental group currently leading a worldwide effort to build a Global Earth Observation System of Systems, GEOSS. The Group on Earth Observations was launched in response to calls for action by the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development and the G8.  GEOSS will enable the world to respond better to the many environmental challenges we face. The work of the Group on Earth Observations is directly linked to what we refer to as the global change ‘grand challenge’, which aligns South Africa with other countries in managing challenges brought about by climate and related change. A capacity building programme involving the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers is underway and will be implemented with the involvement of the National Research Foundation.” Making the World a Better Place Source: Address by the Honourable Minister of Science and Technology, Mrs Naledi Pandor at the SAIEE Centenary Breakfast Date: 5 June 2009  The IEEE and SAIEE are bounded together by a National Society Agreement, an agreement of cooperation.

  12. IEEE = Leader in Technology Journal Citation Report Results, by Impact Factor IEEE publishes: • i#1journalin Electrical and Electronic Engineering • 18 of the top 20 journals in Electrical and Electronic Engineering • 9 of the top 10 journals in Telecommunications • 6 of top 10 journals in Computer Science, Hardware & Architecture • 5 of top 20 journals in Computer Science, Information Systems • 8 of top 20 journals in Computer Science, Software Engineering • # 1 in Imaging Science • # 1 in Robotics • # 2 in Artificial Intelligence • # 2 in Transportation Technology • # 4 in Biomedical Engineering The ISI JCR presents “quantifiable statistical data that provides a systematic, objective way to evaluate the world’s leading journals” (2007 report released June 2008)

  13. A journal's Eigenfactor Article Influence score is a measure of a journal's prestige based on per article citations According to Eigenfactor.org*, IEEE has: • Top 10 in Telecommunications • 8 of the Top 10 in Circuits • 7 of the Top 10 in Power Systems • 4 of the top 6 in Control Theory • #1 journal in Electromagnetic Engineering • #3 journal in Computer Imaging Eigenfactor: • Ranks the influence of journals much as Google ranks web pages • Journals considered influential if cited often by other influential journals • Measures journal price as well as citation influence • Contains scholarly journals as well as newsprint, PhD theses, & magazines • Adjusts for citation differences across disciplines • Uses 5-year citation data • Completely free *Article Influence Score from Eigenfactor.org, November 2008

  14. Non-patent references to top 25 patenting organizations IEEE cited nearly4xmorethan nearest competitor IEEE • Source: 1790 Analytics 2008 • U.S. patent references from the top 25 patenting organizations in 2007 to top publishers • Based on number of references to papers/standards/conferences from 1997-2007
