  2. Writing (worth 50%)Table of contents • Revising and Editing Reading Selection • Revising and Editing multiple choice questions (22 questions, 1 pt. each) • Expository Essay (worth 24 pts—26%) • A 2nd Field Test Essay • *Remember there is a 5hour limit!

  3. Revising and Editing You will read two short writing selections and choose the corrections in multiple choice format. (Each section worth 24% of total test score)

  4. One Page Essays Expository

  5. Students will write 2 one-page essays (26 lines maximum) addressing the prompts. You may not make extra lines or write outside of the box. • Essays are graded on a 1, 2, 3, 4 scale (1 Expository; 1 Expository field test) • Can use the dictionary and thesaurus on the entire STAAR test!

  6. Expository One Page Essay • Expository writing is a type of writing where the purpose is to inform, describe, explain, or define the author's subject to the reader. • You want to EXPLAIN your opinion on the prompt • Having a thesis is essential in writing a focused and coherent expository piece. • Write in 3rd person point of view (Present tense) • Use DETAILED and SPECIFIC examples to prove your thesis

High scores require an economical use of space: tight, specific, logical development—no wasted words. • Don’t skip lines between paragraphs-indent your paragraphs. • Short, effective introduction and conclusion also a must. (Both planning and revision are absolutely essential!) • Must mention the prompt in your introduction and conclusion.

  8. Read: A short synopsis of some kind or a quotation Think: The synopsis or quotation generalized and reworded Write: An even more focused rewording Be Sure to: (state a clear thesis, organize your writing, develop it, choose words carefully, proofread)

  9. READ the information in the box below. THINK carefully about this statement. (Statement generalized and reworded) WRITE an essay explaining pertaining to READ/THINK. Be sure to— -clearly state your thesis -organize and develop your ideas effectively -choose your words carefully -edit your writing for grammar, mechanics, and sentences This will have some information that you must read.

  10. The answer sheet for your essay looks like this. DO NOT write outside the box. You only have 26 lines.

  11. Read through each essay and check your grammar, spelling, punctuation, etc.

Reading (worth 50%)Table of contents • Two single reading selections • Two paired reading selections • A visual representation • Multiple choice questions on the selections (28 questions worth 1 pt ea.) • 3 Short answer questions on the reading selections (worth 9 pts. each, one is a field test)

  14. STAAR Reading STAAR Reading Assessments will emphasize your ability 1. to “go beyond” a literal understanding of what you read 2. to make connections within and across texts 3. to think critically/inferentially about different types of texts Multiple choice questions worth 30% of total score

STAAR Short Answers Each short answer reading question bases on a 0-3 rubric and weighted by 3, for a total of 9 points Short answer questions worth 20% of total score Students have 10 lines to answer each question: 9 “light lines” plus the heavy “border line” at the bottom of the box (You CANNOT write outside of the box!) To score a 2 or 3, the text evidence must be considered accurate and relevant (2) or specific and well chosen (3)

  16. Your short answer document will have 3 of these boxes: 10 LINES *You must not write outside of the boxes.*

  17. 1. Read the first selection and then work on the parts of the test that relate to that selection. You might forget what you read if you don’t use it immediately. Do the multiple choice for each selection before moving on to the next reading selection. NEXT write ideas for the short answer question using the scratch paper in your booklet. The answer document gives you a very small space for your answer. You must plan carefully. C. THEN write your short answer on the answer document. WARNING:You can NOT write outside of the box on your answer document. Your paper will be graded on a computer screen and only the answer box will show.

Do NOT • work through the STAAR like it’s a regular book. • Instead, follow these steps: • Read the multiple choice & short answer questions before you start. • They will give you some insight to the selections. Mark up the test! • 1. Read the first selection • and answer the MC that is about the first selection +write a single selection SAQ • 2. Read the second selection • and answer the MC about the second selection • 3. Read the paired selections • and answer the MC + a crossover short answer, which is on both selections. • 4. Read the field test selection(s) and answer the MC + SAQ (could be single-selection or crossover).

  19. REVIEW OF STEPS Read the multiple choice and short answer questions Before you start. The short answers will tell you what the stories are about.

  20. Let’s take the test.

  21. Before you start, Read the first short answer question. This contains insightful information about the selection. It will really help you understand it.

  22. 1.Read the first selection carefully Look for the information that you read in the short answer question. Make notes in the margins. Practice active reading!

  23. 1A. • Answer the multiple choice • questions for the first story. • Go back and check the story frequently. • DO NOT guess without looking. • Cross out wrong answers (You can write in your booklet). • Do not leave any questions blank. • Try to choose the best answer. • Use context clues.

  24. 1B. Write your idea for the short answer on the scratch paper in your booklet 1C. Write your final short answer on the answer sheet.

  26. 2. Read the 2ndselection and answer all MC. 3. Then, read the Paired selections and do all of the parts of the test that relate .

  27. 4. Answer the short answer crossover question. It covers both selections. Use: T D/E D/E C You will have 2 quotes from each selection and commentary that explains how the selections connect
