  8. Basic Tenets of Guided Reading • Students - primary interactive readers • Teacher – facilitates reading and discussions • Most frequently in small groups (4-6) • Sometimes one-on-one or whole group

  9. Vary the Resources Used for Guided Reading of IT • Books • Magazines • Newspaper Articles • Pamphlets/Brochures • Internet or CD-ROM Text • Parts of a Book (chapter) • Sections of Text

Instructional Strategies for Guided Reading and Application • Explicit Teaching of Individual Comprehension Strategies monitor comprehension, activate/apply relevant prior knowledge, generate questions/thinking aloud, uncover text structure, draw inferences, construct visual representations, summarize, etc.

Instructional Strategies for Guided Reading and Application • Explicit Teaching of Groups of Comprehension Strategies + Reciprocal Teaching (make predictions, ask questions, clarify, summarize) + Collaborative Strategic Reading variation of reciprocal teaching (preview, click and clunk, get the gist, wrap up) + Transactional Strategies Instruction apply interpretive comprehension strategies flexibly that are learned over extended period of time
