  2. Uncanny: Surrealism and Graphic Designis the first major exhibition to examine the influence of Surrealism on graphic image making and graphic design.

  3. The exhibition features: • 7 thematic sections • more than 250 items across Europe and USA • posters, books, record covers, films, magazines, prints • historical illustrations of the 1930s • compelling images and designs from the 1960s up to the present • a selection of films

  4. It includes original publications by Surrealist artists such as Salvador Dalí, Max Ernst and Hans Bellmer

  5. and presents unsettling graphic works by Karel Teige (Czechoslovakia), Roman Cieslewicz (Poland), and Andrzej Klimowski (UK) to name just a few.

  6. the intriguing power of the image’s metamorphosis • the lexicon of anatomical images and the fragmented human body The themes explored include • the inexplicable juxtaposition of fortuitous objects • the female figure as avatar of desire • the use of psychic automatism to freely express the unconscious

  7. Uncanny: Surrealism and Graphic Design demonstrates that graphic design can be a place to encounter the strange, the fantastical and the uncanny.

  8. Conceived and curated by the acclaimed design critic, writer and theoretician of visual culture, Rick Poynor for the Moravian Gallery - the exhibition was realized on the occasion of the Brno Biennial of Graphic Design 2010.
